Live-in landlord rents room for $1300, demands tenant doesn't use kitchen at the last minute: 'Why am I paying half when I wont be using half the house'

A kitchenette in an attic room with a microwave and minifridge.

So this woman wants to rent a room in her house with no home access for $1300..

This is in Portland, Maine. Originally when we spoke she said its $1100 all included, a large bedroom, a (mostly) private bath (said she may use it when in the home gym across from bedroom.
I'd basically have access to top floor room with microwave & mini fridge, the mostly private bath, and then the gym. Thats it. She said I could do laundry once or twice a week but no other house access. No living room, no kitchen, no guests or overnight guests.

Its being advertisted for only a few months so I thought maybe it could be ok, but then the day before I'm set to move in, she sends the lease and she upped the rent to $1200 PLUS utilities. Part of the utilities are half the electric?
via Vanessa_Lila

She didn't see why she should be paying so much.

Like why am I paying half when I wont be using half the house cant even cook a proper meal. This last minute switch plus the other restrictions have put a bad taste in my mouth, but now I'm di In near set to move in and have work starting soon in Portland.

Does this sound too ridiculous and like I'm being taken advantage of? I know I wont feel too good about it if I move in and start to feel that way, or if more switch ups/restrictions appear. Or if I start to feel like a second class citizen while shes cooking with guests over and I'm sitting in my room with a microwave paying half the electric for the house.

Would you pass or do it short term while looking for something better?

A woman wearing a coat smiles as she sits in front of a door on a brick wall.

People didn't think that this was a lease to be signed.

staunch_character Keep looking. This is insane. She wants $1200/month extra cash, but clearly doesn't really want a roommate. The fact that she has so little respect for her renter that she can't reserve 1 bathroom for their exclusive use is a huge red flag.

Practical_Moon926 She'd be an awful person to live with. She's showing you exactly what kind of person she is. I would run from all of that.

sltydgx Some Airbnb folks do extended stay. Out of boredom I did a quick search and one place popped up for 1400$ a month in that area. You may want to explore that option before you lock in. If nothing else renting a Airbnb for a few weeks will give you time to look into furnished rentals.

She shouldn't be making these demands.

Dare2BeU420 Please dont rent that room. Nevermind the cost, the whole situation seems completely ridiculous.

zukiraphaera Sometimes, arguably, renting hotel/motel room for long term is the most economically sound decision. Worth looking into.

TheMain Tony If I started work tomorrow and needed a base today, I'd sleep in my car and shower at the gym. That person is only going to get more bonkers.

It could be the start of a horror story.

whiterussian802 I'd avoid this at all costs. You haven't even moved in yet and she's acting like this. It will only get worse.

Sea_Thought3464 I think you understand this is a very bad idea but you are obviously very desperate. You're going to be thinking about this lady for 10 years if you spend one year in her house
