Landlord takes photos of unit without tenant's knowledge, posts listing 7 months before the lease is up: 'Rent is always paid on time'

An apartment ‘for rent’ sign on a grassy lawn

My apartment showed up for rent online with new photos of my stuff, but my lease doesn't end for another 7 months.

A coworker sent me a Zillow listing yesterday asking if this was my apartment. Same unit number, same building, and it says available next month. The photos are recent. My couch, TV, kitchen stuff and even my cat are visible in them.
Maintenance was in my apartment about two weeks ago for a scheduled smoke detector inspection. I knew they were coming in for that, but nobody mentioned taking photos. My lease has another 7 months and I've never told them I'm leaving. Rent is always paid on time and I do well financially so there's no payment issue either.

I emailed management and they said the unit was listed by mistake. When I asked why photos were taken during the inspection, they didn't answer that part. Would you believe this was just a listing mistake? I'm mostly confused why they needed current photos of an occupied apartment in the first place.

Commenters gave their advice and ideas on the situation.

KrofftSurvivor Did they pull the listing after you called? Because they should have pulled it on the same business day...

NaturGirl Taking photos of the unit with YOUR stuff in it and without giving permission for them to take the photos seems ick too.

NightGirl007 Those photos are a serious privacy violation. Never should have been taken. Also, the unit should not have been listed. I would go talk to the manager in person and get to the bottom of it.

PupOben This is EXACTLY why my partner and I have hidden cameras in our home. It's only for cases of theft or sh like this. I have signs on both entry doors that say "Smile. You're on camera."

AxeZillall Call the number and inquire about the apartment

onlinealias350 are they doing photographing your home without your knowledge or consent and then posting those photos online?

Caramelita60 I'm so glad I stumbled upon this post. I'd bet you anything this is one of those fake owner scams. They'll uoload photos advertising a unit available, with lower price, etc. and ask for payment via Cash App, Venmo, Paypal, etc. They

rarely show in person because they're always "conveniently" out of the country/town with some emergency, etc. Did it show an amount and contact information? You can google the news, and look up these scams on here, Tictoc and FB. Whoever took those pictures are in on the scam.

randomusername1919 I hope your renter's insurance is paid up in case someone sees your stuff and likes it, or if the LL cleans the property out while you are at work.

Fabolous4201 - Report the listing as fraud - the unit is not available so if they didn't remove it yet, it's fraudulent.

istoomycat If maintenance guys were pulling a scam and it they were, even though management denied it, they now know. Good you contacted them immediately. Still a security breach that needs explaining.
