Am I the bad guy for not wanting to buy my girlfriend a steak?

My (29M) girlfriend (28F) and I frequently eat out and enjoy meals together. I have a credit card that offers $100 a quarter on dining out. While out we decided to go to a family diner where meals are $20-40 a plate. My gf the avid steak

enthusiast wanted to order a $60 steak while I wanted to order from the $20-30 lunch menu. I essentially stated no it. was too expensive and offered her a $40 salmon instead. The $100 would've covered the whole bill if she ordered the steak and I wouldn't have paid

mallionaire7 It's his money. She could have gotten her own steak if she wanted it so bad. Or spoke up in the moment and said she'd pay would pay the difference of the salmon and steak.

enterhereplease it's her meal. if he's offering to pay, he's not entitled to decide what she eats. I'm not saying he's an a_h_le but he's viewing it as he saved $20 when in reality he kind of just wasted the $40 on something she didn't want.

Subject Ad9595 If he is paying for it he has a right to cap the price, if she really wanted the steak she could have let him know in the moment that she would pay for it. I do agree that he isn't entitled to decide what she eats, but he IS entitled to decide what he pays for.

Upset Agent2398 You guys gotta all be single. Lol. You don't invite someone to dinner and then cap what they are allowed to spend. If you want to do that, you do it quietly. You check the restaurant menu BEFOREHAND and if it's too pricey, you choose a different restaurant. He KNEW his girl was a steak enthusiast. lol. Of course she's ordering the steak.

jcaashby If I take a random woman out sure I may put a cap on what I am willing to spend but if it is my GF/WIFE who will also spend money on me SHE CAN ORDER WHATEVER SHE WANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Portland Eric YTA. Are you only willing to take your girlfriend out if it's free? If you do t have the money, say so and work out a plan together. Or agree on a budget in advance. Just communicate, it's not that hard.

rabidunicorn21 It sounds like the budget was $100 and she immediately wanted to spend 60% of it on herself.

Educational_Horse469 YTA. One thing I loved about my husband from our first date was that he'd order the most expensive thing on the menu so I didn't have to feel weird about ordering something I really wanted. We're older, so he was paying. After 25 years of marriage I often get the chicken or a salad, because that's what I want, but a restaurant isn't where you go to be cheap. It's where you go for a little luxury. Sometimes women need a little extra iron, btw.

BxAnnie YTA. Why would you deny a person the thing they want for dinner when you're out at a restaurant? You're willing to di on a $40 hill? Yikes.
