Job candidate receives a $30k lowball offer despite being the hiring panel's "unanimous first choice"—this after a 4-week-long intensive 5-round interview process: 'They sent an offer for $62k and claimed the higher band was for a "unicorn"'

The candidate was surprised by the low offer he received after a successful interview.

"She cleared her throat and told me that the top bracket was strictly reserved for an 'exceptional unicorn hire'"

The candidate reviews the offer pensively.

The responses

Boogity2024 "85 to 95,000" is not a "top bracket"; it is the salary range. They lied. Your recruiter lied. The "culture fit chat" you had with the regional VP clearly didn't include that they were shady and unethical. You dodged a bullet.

Froggyevening Whew, I thought you might have accepted. Good for you, F these scumbags. They're going to have the same reaction from every good hire they try and pull this on.

kitrose4 They didn't come back with another offer? It's probably for the best bc if they are this deceptive at the start most likely horrible to work for. Are you in US? I live in NY & it has the Pay Transparency Law, other states have it but I dont know which. It requires the employer to post a salary range for the position. If you were given $85-95,000 as the salary range & then they dropped it to $60k (without changing the job description & responsibilities) you may have a legit complaint wit

subpar-life-attempt This happened to me twice. First one I instantly said no to, the next one I told them yes and then waited until final moment of the offer to tell them that I did some more research and this isn't the unicorn job you made it seem to be.

Pristine_Acadia_4274 This happened to me said range was 65k-95k first round I asked about the wide difference and got a yadda yadda answer. Got offered 70K, took cause I was out of work for over 8 months and was the only offer in months. Convinced they do this to lure in former high income people that have been out of work

LimitVarious5283 If you go to work for them can count on them doing more of the same

RealKillerSean Had a job advertised as 85k - 95k and the job offer came on with 75k and bonus per quarter incentives to max my pay out at 85k.

AttachedHeartTheory I would sign the offer, act as though I was going to start, and then the day I was supposed to start I wouldn't show up.

Venkman_P I'm a unicorn and I get the same sh. "Oh. We'd never pay the top of the advertised range!" The difference is, I tell them what they need to pay me, up front. So we don't waste everybody's time like they did with you.

supervillaindsgnr I would be furious they wasted my time so much. Like not even remotely an acceptable difference in salary range.

Itchy_Tumbleweed_417 The audacity, this used to rarely happen. I mean it would happen enough that I would make sure I printed the ad I was responding to so I didn't feel like it was my mistake when they tried to lowball me. The last time this happened to me and they lowball me I was sad to tell them that there was no way I could work for that salary. They really wanted me so they increased the salary not to what I wanted but just something in the middle. I would've been mad about it if I had tak
