Company charges $18 for 'free' employee appreciation lunch without warning: 'I just find it ridiculous that a company can turn a thank you into something you owe them for'

My company is charging us for the free employee appreciation lunch.

Our office had an employee appreciation lunch last Friday. HR made a big deal about it being on the company and ordered food from a local restaurant. Today we got an email saying anyone who didn't stay for the team building session afterward has to pay $18 for their meal.
The session wasn't mentioned in the original invite. I left after lunch because I had a client call, which my manager scheduled. The $18 isn't even the issue. I just find it ridiculous that a company can turn a thank you into something you owe them for.

Three other people got the same email. One of them replied asking where this policy was written and HR hasn't responded yet.

Alert-Artichoke-2743 This sounds like a tantrum by a higher executive who became enraged at seeing a food bill for a large number of people for an amount of money that actually seemed capable of buying something, and then learned that some employees didn't stick around for humiliating. group exercises after the free fast food.

A restaurant can't even demand $18 for something you didn't order. The company has no way to enforce this except intimidating people.

IglooBackpack My job had a July picnic kind of thing. It was scheduled for after our shift ended so I was just gonna go right after work. They then decided to "let <us> off early so people could go home and shower or pick up family." That sounds fine except when I asked if we were still being paid for those two hours they said no.

So essentially everyone on my shift was charged two hours worth of pay for this free employee event. Immediate loss of motivation for my job.

mercurygreen I've had "volun-told" things like this where they tried to charge employees for them. It's worth noting that NONE of the companies that did this still exist.

manofredearth Make sure to spread the word that no one will pay that fee since the employees didn't ask for the goods/services. Can't try charging anyone after the fact.

Sesoru Lol. Nah dog. And if they try and garnish it, pretty sure youd be able to labor board it.

Key_Head3851 Highly unethical business practice. If no one (or few) employees voluntarily pay, the employer, I suspect will deduct $18.00 from everyone's paycheck, which is illegal.

TxnAvngr Tell them that the email did not mention you had to pay for the lunch so you are declining their request. They cannot change their minds and tell you there is a charge after you ate the meal

praetorian1979 Sounds like y'all should band together and bargain collectively as a group. There's a word for that already but I'm drawing a blank... Oh yeah! It's called a union! Form one and go to town on them!
