22 Cats Claiming Suitcases, Catching Flights and Becoming the Main Attraction on Vacation

How do cats always end up becoming the main attraction on vacation?

I can spend weeks thinking about a trip, choosing places to visit, planning all the things I want to see... Only to then notice a cat sitting somewhere, and my priorities change. I'll have to take forty pictures of this beautiful baby. I was excited about the architecture and I'll get back to it once I know whether this little guy likes visitors.

I've seen cats aboard flights that behaved very well. They even made me curious about having one as a travel companion. But then I decide I have enough trouble deciding what belongs in my suitcase, so imagine also traveling with cat stuff. I'm one of those people who becomes aware of everything they need to keep track of when I'm already in the car heading to the airport. I'm not the one who arrives 3 hours early. I'm the one who has an hour to spare and drinks coffee before boarding. Once there, I check my gate, look for my documents, and then check my bag again just in case my passport grew little legs and ran away. Seeing a cat being carried through the terminal makes me wonder how I would manage all that with a little passenger. I would probably spend the wait looking at him and forgetting to check the departure board.

When I look at my vacation photos, I'll always enjoy looking at the cat pictures that bring back those little moments. Trips are all about little moments, and cats only make them better.

  • During a road trip, I'm a different person. My main objective is to get comfortable. That includes wearing comfy clothes, bringing a lot of snacks, and stopping at the gas station once in a while to stretch my legs. I also enjoy looking out the window until I get sleepy and decide the scenery can continue without my attention. Just like cats, there's some point I commit to my nap. I apologize to the driver, but I need to get some rest. Cats wake up from their naps without neck pain; that's our only difference.

  • Every time I go on vacation with my family, choosing a movie during the flight becomes one of the hardest decisions. My brother always picks a classic movie he hasn't seen before for some reason, and I scroll through EVERYTHING before choosing a sitcom episode I already know by heart. It's usually Friends or How I Met Your Mother. All the scrolling and the careful choosing of a show just to fall asleep in the first fifteen minutes. Yes, I usually sleep on the flight. The airplane screen is just a distraction from my main objective. So looking at cats napping through their road trips makes me feel understood. We have a lot in common. We both spend a large part of the journey asleep while someone else keeps track of when we’re supposed to arrive.
