"Karasu defended the flock from a hawk today."
It's funny that so many One Piece characters have bird names, but this is no mistake. Eiichiro Oda, the manga's creator, has once stated in one of his Q&A sections of One Piece that he always has a book about birds within reach for when he has writer's block for character names. When he can't name a character, he admitted he simply opens the bird book for inspiration. And that's understandable when you write such a long story with a vast world populated by so many characters - each needs a name just as it needs a design. So it just so happens that One Piece has so many characters with bird-inspired names. And it's very obvious these people are One Piece fans.
It's true that ducks don't possess the human concept of courage in the conscious sense, they actually exhibit remarkable fearlessness in the face of danger that can easily be interpreted as bravery. And that makes ducks brave animals. Rather than acting on a moral choice like we humans, a duck's bravery is driven by a very powerful evolutionary instinct for survival. They're driven to protect their flocks, especially if there are ducklings involved. Ducks are fierce defenders of their family and territory.
