Why is it that any attachment to nature is seen as “woo-woo?” Why is wanting to tell a field of flowers your problems seen as weird? They're beautiful, and they listen. What's so bad about that? Sorry, not sorry that I can make friends with the trees on my block, and you struggle to meet girls because you think they're all gold diggers, ken.
In fact, one time I was grieving. This was not the first time in my life I lost someone I cared dearly about, but this one truly hit me so hard. I couldn't get out of bed for two weeks, I was crying during any waking moment, and I couldn't eat. I was a mess. My friends took me to a little cabin in Vermont one weekend to try and help me out. I was a shell of a human being, but I went. I still love my friends very much. However, there was one point where we were by the fire, they were dancing to music, and I just couldn't handle it. They didn't notice me wander a bit away. Not too far, but just out of earshot. I don't know why, but I stopped at a field of wildflowers. I just stared into the field for a while before I started talking. I told the flowers everything I just went through, how much pain my heart was in, and how hard it had been to carry on living. Before I knew it, I was on my knees crying. This was all in the span of 10 minutes, maybe 15, so it wasn't even that long. My friends eventually found me and asked what happened. With teary eyes, I said, “I was just talking to some friends.” And that was that. I wasn't healed, but I felt a little lighter in that moment. I ate almost a whole plate of food that night, finally.
So, sure, the flowers weren't actually talking to me. However, the fact that I felt safe enough to say things to them that I couldn't say to others, and felt comforted by their beauty, is one of the reasons why nature is so important.
