69-year-old man and 11-year-old shy rescued lion have been best friends since he was a cub, now they cuddle at night, ride trucks together, and go on walks side by side
Being lifelong friends with a lion is a dream most of us will never achieve. But some people do.
I think every cat purrson has the same completely unrealistic dream: befriend all cats. Yes, even the big ones. Especially the big ones.
My personal dream is to become friends with a lion, cheetah, or any other feline that could technically eat me but hopefully chooses not to. I know that probably is not happening, so for now, I settle for obsessing over big cats in sanctuaries and writing about people who are basically living my dream. Some lucky people raise cheetahs, become a part of lion prides, or rescue bobcats, all while doing the hardest thing in the universe… earning a cat's trust.
Today we have another person to be jealous of… ehem, sorry, admire. Meet 69-year-old Frikie Von Solms and Zion, an 11-year-old rescued lion who has become his best friend. Their story is adorable, obviously, but it also reminds us that life for big cats is not always as simple as it looks from afar. Sometimes stepping in to help is not just kind - it's necessary. Person spots a cat wearing a SpaghettiOs can on the way to work and makes a decision that changes their morning
Cats are naturally curious creatures, which is a cute way of saying they will stick their heads into absolutely anything and then act shocked when it goes badly. Believe me, I know - I just had to dislodge my cat's chonky noggin' this morning from an empty wet food can.
That is apparently what happened to one very unlucky little lady who got her head stuck in a SpaghettiOs can with no one to help her. Thankfully, after a while, someone spotted her and stopped to help. They managed to remove the can and fully expected the cat to bolt the second she was free. But instead, she turned out to be ridiculously friendly, happily accepting attention like she had not just spent an unknown amount of time cosplaying as a scared can of pasta.
Leaving her behind wasn't really an option, but the rescuer had work to get to and a boss to call. At the very least, we can say that her spaghetti-can era is officially over. Read the full story of this rescue here!
Family stops packing for a beach trip to rescue a tiny kitten from a truck, and a year later she's running the house
One family was getting ready for a beach trip when tiny cries coming from a nearby truck completely changed their plans. A kitten had somehow wedged herself into the wheel well, and by pure luck, the normally locked lot happened to be open that day. They got her out, discovered that she was covered in fleas, and brought her somewhere safe.
More than a year later, this tiny roadside rescue is now a full-fledged member of the family. She happily enriches the lives of her two older siblings (although, if you ask them, they might say she terrorizes them).
One thing I love about this rescue story is that the rescue was only the beginning. That trembling tiny kitten eventually became a confident household menace with opinions, zoomies, and absolutely no respect for purrsonal space. Exactly how a cat should be. Her whole rescue story waits for your eyes here!
After 1.5 years of being homeless with their loyal cat, proud pawrent and feline share heartwarming photo of their first night home
'He's more than "just a cat" to me'
It's time to get a little purrsonal.
When I was 15, I spent months terrified that coming out might leave me homeless. I had been outred before I was ready, and for about 12 hours, I genuinely believed I might lose my home. Thankfully, my parents told me they still loved me and that I was safe. Not everyone gets that happy ending.
That fear has always stayed with me, because homelessness is not just “not having a house.” It affects everything: sleep, safety, work, banking, mail, stability, and your ability to plan even a few days ahead. This is why this story hit me so hard.
After 1.5 years of homelessness, one cat pawrent finally moved into a new apartment with their beloved cat, Balou.Their first night home was simple: a bare room, a cat, and somewhere safe to sleep. But that picture means so much more than that: it means stability, relief, a door that locks, and a place to wake up tomorrow. “We made it” may only be 3 words, but it can mean everything to the right purrson. Their full story is here!
Kindhearted hooman gives a black kitten a place to sleep, only for him to come back and ask for a forever home
The Cat Distribution System works in meowsterious ways, but apparently this little void was very sure about his assignment. One hooman found him sitting on their porch at dusk and brought him inside for the night. The next morning, they tracked down his owner and learned that he was the last of 5 kittens who had not been adopted. So, they returned him, but a few hours later, he was back on their porch.
At that point, I think even the neighbor had to admit defeat. They gave purrmission for the hooman to keep him, and the kitten has been settling into his new home ever since.
Of all of his brothers and sisters, why was he the last one left? Was it because he was a black cat? This is my cue to stand up and defend black cats, so I'm taking it - they're the sweetest and most adorable of the cat colors. There, I said it!
Maybe he didn't get chosen for a reason, maybe he was just waiting for the right porch. Read his rescue story here!
Tiny tuxedo kittens found beneath a tree in a woman's backyard are welcomed into their forever home alongside their siblings and stray mama cat, giving the whole feline family a safe place to stay
Imagine waking up one day to find a family of felines underneath one of the trees in your backyard. How lucky can one purrson be? I also want a tree that makes kittens!
The CDS doesn't always send just one cat; sometimes it sends you the whole family package. Instead of hiding outside and hoping for the best, these black-and-white babies get to grow up somewhere safe, warm, and together, Their mama does not have to keep moving them from place to place, and the siblings do not have to get separated.
This is one of those rescue endings you always dream of. No one gets left behind, everyone gets a cozy place to stay, and one backyard encounter turns into a full-house feline family. Just purrfect! Watch their rescue video here.
Family follows a strange sound through their house, breaks open a wall to find a kitten who meows for help; now they're on a mission to rescue his mom
Cats have a meowraculous talent for ending up in places tha tmake absolutely no sense. Car engines? Sure. Bathtubs? Yup. And even inside the walls of your house? Absolutely! It seems like the CDS has discovered home renovation, and I'm not entirely thrilled about it.
One family started hearing mysterious meows coming from behind their walls and eventually traced the sound to a crawlspace, where a kitten had somehow gotten stuck. As ridiculous as it sounds, cats actually seek out warm, enclosed hiding spots… even when they don't come with an exit strategy. Hence why this kitten probably ended up between the wall and the foundation of the house.
The CDS knows how to get the job done: put a kitten somewhere weird enough and eventually a purrson gets curious enough, investigates, rescues them, and suddenly has a new roommate. Cats may be terrible at choosing hiding spots, but they are suspiciously good at choosing people. Click here to watch their rescue!
Neighbors hear a crying kitten in someone's garden, they rescue him before it gets too cold and starts raining, and take him home to foster him until finding him a furever home
Not every purrson who rescues a kitten can become their furrever home, but that doesn't make their rescue any less important. Sometimes, people already have other animals. Sometimes, there is not enough space, time, or money to properly care for another pet long-term, so instead, they foster. They give the kitten food, warmth, a bath, a safe place to stay, and enough time to figure out what comes next.
What I love most about this story is that they did not hear this kitten in their own backyard… they heard it from their neighbor's! Underneath all those plants, they were trapped and difficult to reach. That might already be enough for some to say “not my problem” and move on, but not these rescuers! The rescued the smol baby, took them to the vet, and fostered them until they found a family who wanted to adopt them.
That is what makes fostering such an impurrtant part of cat rescue! You do not have to be the final chapter in a kitten's story to completely change how it ends. Read through the full version of this radical rescue here!
Man reunites with the cheetah he raised after nearly 3 years apart, and their heartwarming reunion proves he never forgot his favorite human
There are plenty of dream jobs out there that most of us are absolutely unqualified to do, like being a panda nanny, a shoebill keeper, or a wildlife photographer. The wildlife photographer is beautiful in theory, but becomes less so once you remember the bugs and staying still for hours on end.
But raising cheetahs? That one is hard to beat.
Dolph C. Volker has spent years caring for and bonding with cheetahs as part of conservation work, giving him the kind of relationship with these animals that most of us can only dream about One chetah in purrticular, Gabriel, became especially close with him. Then, they were separated for two and a half years. That is a long time for any friendship, and it would be fair to wonder whether Gabriel would still remember him.
Guess what? He did!
When the two finally reunited, Gabriel recognized his favorite hooman almost immediately, proving just how strong those bonds can become. Honestly, if being remembered by a cheetah after years apart is part of the job description, I think I may need to rethink my career path. Watch their video here!
Vacationers find kitten at the Airbnb in the California desert, their trip turns into a rescue mission to save her from coyotes and give her a furrever home
Now that we've gotten to the end of this week's meowgazine, we can safely say that the CDS has no limits or boundaries, not even when you're on vacation! The CDS is not afraid to completely rearrange your life, even when you're living out of a suitcase.
While staying in the California desert, one couple found a tiny 8-week-old kitten hiding near their Airbnb. She weight just 1.2 pounds, and with coyotes and other predators nearby, they couldn't just leave her outside. So, they lured her in with ham lunchmeat, which naturally led to them naming her “Hamantha," or Ham, for short. (Cat people truly do name their cats after the weirdest things.)
They brought her home with them to the Pacific Northwest, where she will now meet their 11-year-old cat, Rigby. They are already imagining the relationship as a tiny kitten annoying a grumpy old man, basically Up but with more whiskers.
The beest part of this story is that it purrfectly highlights how quickly life can change. One minute, you're relaxing on vacation, and the next you are smuggling a desert kitten home with deli meat and planning her introduction to the family.
Peak CDS behavior. Enjoy their heartwarming story here!
