Falling in love with someone who doesn't exist is a canon event for a girl. Real girls fell in love with a fictional character at least once in their lives. My dream boyfriend at that moment had wings, a mysterious past and no way of finding out that I existed. Ahh, my ideal man.
After my vampire phase, I moved on to fallen angels. I need to name names now: Patch, from Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush saga. Does it ring a bell? Well, he was obviously my boyfriend and I was obsessed with those books. Anyways, now that I'm a grown-up, I've accepted that Patch won't be asking me out. But I hope he knows I would have said yes.

Fantasy novels always have like seven more books for you to get entertained, so it was easy to get obsessed with them. I loved that feeling of having a whole series ahead of me. Before I got hooked on TV shows, books gave me characters I wanted to keep spending time with. I'd finish one and want the next. Besides, I needed to know what happened to the love of my life.

I'm fond of that version of myself. I could get comfortable with a novel and disappear into it for hours. Even though the characters were fictional, the emotions they provoked were real. I felt excitement, affection, sadness, thrill. Isn't it exciting that a story can make me care that much?

As for dragons, I can understand getting attached to them because they are like supernatural pets. I didn't get so attached to dragons, but if you did, I won't judge. You can try putting wings on your dog.
