I understand his frustration, and I recognize that habit of expecting myself to be further along, too. But I'm also happy to give a kitten time to learn and celebrate every little success along the way. I don't withhold my enthusiasm until the kitten has mastered absolutely everything. Talking to my friend makes me realize how much we need to have that same patience with ourselves. We're making an effort. No one has everything figured out from the start. So, our achievements deserve encouragement while we're in the process of making them happen.

Between studying, working, maintaining a house, a social life, my friends, my girlfriend, my family, and everything else I'm trying to keep up with, I sometimes expect to understand things so soon. But if we're talking about kittens, I'll give a kitten unlimited attempts to catch a toy. Yet I still get annoyed with myself for needing to reread a paragraph because I can't concentrate faster. Apparently, my patience depends on whether the person learning has little ears.

Being little makes it easy for us to understand how much there is still to learn. A kitten's size makes it easy for us to remember that. Of course they don't know how everything works yet. But we sometimes forget that being adults doesn't mean we must have everything figured out. We don't have experience with everything, either. There are things we won't know how to do unless we actually give them a go, ask questions, make mistakes, try again. We can't expect ourselves to skip all of that and arrive at the part where we're good at something. And if we're too embarrassed about being inexperienced to even start, we're not giving ourselves much of a chance to learn. We're allowed to need practice, even if we're bigger than a kitten.
