Not everyone is a cinephile or a movie lover, in more common terms. Having a passion for cinema and filmmaking is a serious thing… If you don't believe me, you can ask my own mother, and she will tell you exactly that. No one out there loves movies as much as she does, knows every single quote from her favorites, and never misses a chance to use them in an argument or even in casual conversation.

I don't know who you got it from, but she's obsessed. She never misses an Oscar and is always up to date on the weirdest, most niche Hollywood gossip, especially about her two favorite actors: Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. She has watched every single movie from them and loves them all, literally.

I love seeing how passionate she gets when people ask her about movies, and it teaches me a lot about hobbies and doing what you love. Even though she's never worked in the movie industry or thought about it, she's a good example of how love and excitement for one topic can take you, no matter how random or complicated it might be. Following your gut and doing what you love is key.

The best part about being a cinephile, or even becoming one, is that you don't need to go to film school or be a director to have the sharp eye needed to analyze and criticize movies. Look at my mom, for example. She doesn't watch movies just for pleasure: she pays attention to every detail and is very mindful of her opinions. Over time, you learn to “read movies,” as she describes it, and you become knowledgeable, with strong arguments to defend your opinions, even the most controversial ones. All she needs is our comfortable living room couch, the big TV my dad just bought (to watch football, not movies), and her crochet (yes, she knits while watching movies, crazy, I know). Do all of this and BOOM: congratulations, you have just become a cinephile.

Also, a true cinephile is the one who can watch the very same movie over a thousand times and still get excited about it. My mom's absolute favorite movie of all time is “The Mission”, starring, of course, Robert De Niro. It's an 80s movie with a great story, but it's getting old. The images aren't the best; the music, though beautiful and emotional, doesn't get the justice it deserves because the audio quality isn't great. Do you think this affects my mother? Of course not! My dad gave her the movie CD a couple of years ago, and she still watches it religiously, without hesitation. She always cries at the same scenes and complains about the same problems, as if she were watching it for the first time. It's adorable. After the movie ends, every quote and line of dialogue stays fresh in her mind for the next couple of weeks, and suddenly every conversation reminds her of a particular scene, and she gets emotional and excited all over again. Sometimes, it's annoying, but other times we just laugh with her. If you have ever had the chance to live with a cinephile, then you know what I'm talking about.
