Sometimes, the family you belong to isn't the one you were born into, but the one that lifted you up and nurtured you to the best of their ability.

I don't know why my social media algorithms decided recently that I'm interested in adopted children content, but… yeah, well, it's interesting. But I honestly have no idea how my algorithms reached this conclusion in the first place. I'm not adopted, I have no one in my family who adopted a kid, and I don't know anyone who's adopted in my immediate surroundings. But my social media accounts started showing me adopted kids (who are now adults) talking about their experiences growing up with a family that's not biologically their own. They usually talk about second chances in life, opportunities they otherwise wouldn't have had, and a lot of gratitude.

Now, when you compare all that to the process of adopting animals, you can draw a lot of similarities between the two. Not that I'm saying that adopting a kid into your family is exactly the same as adopting a fluffy friend in - but there's no denying how similar the themes themselves are. The second chances in a better life (or life at all, in some cases), the opportunities that otherwise would be denied to the adoptee, and the gratitude everyone involved feels in these situations. They're all similar across all kinds of adoption processes.

So you bet that when I saw a baby goat in need adopted by the family who raise them on the farm, because otherwise she wouldn't have made it at all - it caught my eye immediately. It's not just as interesting as the rest of the adoption content my social media algorithms decided I should watch recently - it also touches on the point that many animals could be absolutely helpless if not for someone who's willing to adopt them. Giving them a second chance is the most wholesome and heart-melting thing you could be doing.

Yesterday our goat had quadruplets and one of her babies was extremely small

We watched her for twenty minutes not be able to stand and slowly growing weaker and more tired

We knew she needed help so we brought her inside to warm her up

She was weak but determined. She kept trying and trying to stand

We weren't sure what her chances were of survival Good

We were racing against the clock to get her warmed up enough to give her a bottle of colostrum

Wow, compared to that hand, you can actually visualize how small that goat is - literally a tiny and helpless thing facing all that at only a few hours old. But that's beside the point. I meant that sometimes it's hard to understand the true size of things from an image alone - even when we're talking about animals that are absolutely gigantic. Just think of an image of a white whale you might've seen, and now try to remember an image of a white whale next to a human diver… yeah, that's one huge animal. So the same goes for animals that are very small. And when you hear about a goat, you might think that they're not as small, even as babies - but this one? She was so, so tiny. I'm so glad the family took notice and helped her in time - because that teeny tiny creature fending for themselves is impossible. I don't want to think of the alternative outcome if the family didn't notice or act in time.
