Who decided playing was something we were supposed to outgrow?

Kittens can easily find something to play with. It can be a toy, a piece of paper, a bug, something moving under a blanket. That's enough. We tend to expect that playfulness from kittens because they're little. Of course they want to play! But sometimes we get so used to connecting play with childhood that we forget how much we still enjoy it as adults.

I notice it when I get together with friends and someone brings out a game or suggests trying a silly challenge. We can be sitting around talking, and then we're paying attention to the rules, watching everyone's turn, and getting excited about winning or doing the challenge right. I might have been thinking about leaving soon, but now I need another round. I'm having fun.

There is research that gives me another reason to make room for this. In a study on adult playfulness, some adults spent a week doing exercises like writing down three playful moments from their day or finding a new way to be playful. The exercises increased playfulness and had short-term benefits for well-being. The study looked at building a playful attitude in everyday life rather than testing one particular game. So it can include more than sitting down with a board game. It can start with a joke with a friend, a silly challenge, or finding a way to make an ordinary task more fun.

Paying attention to playful moments could help us notice more opportunities to enjoy ourselves and experience more positive feelings during the day. I may have work to do and things to worry about, but I’m also laughing with someone and having a good time. That matters.
Sometimes I'm joking with a friend or getting carried away with something that makes us laugh and I can be enjoying myself. These little moments give us something to share besides every adult thing we have to get done. When I'm playing, I'm interested in what's happening right there. I want to hear what my friends are saying and see what happens next. I enjoy having something to do together where we can be silly and laugh at ourselves. Not every conversation needs to become an update on work, studying, and everything keeping us busy. We can also have a good time playing together and that will make us happy too.

I like finding a balance. Because after some friends' gatherings, my best friend tells me we played a lot and he didn't have time to talk about something that mattered to him. So there must always be room for both things to happen. We can talk serious business and then play a game that just makes us happy. We're all adults with things to do tomorrow, but we're still getting excited about a game together. I love that plan.

So yes, I expect these kittens to play because they're little. I'm also happy to remember that being a grown-up hasn't taken away my ability to enjoy play. We adults are allowed to like games. I still like laughing with my friends, so I'm going to keep making time for that.
