Entitled woman steals neighbor's $200 clothing order, takes one item and gives away the rest in the apartment building: 'I was so angry'

Two packages sitting on top of one another in front of an apartment door.

My neighbor stole my package and gave it away!

I live in an apartment style condo, meaning units are owned by individuals and all collectively own the common areas, paid for in our condo fees. There is a "living room arrangement" of furniture in the lobby common space, including a coffee table. *IMPORTANT there is another table away from this sitting area where residents leave "free" things that others may have a use for.
I am a plus size lady with a sunny vacation planned in December and I wanted to buy some new swim/beach wear. I placed an order with a popular online retailer.

About 10 days later I was emailed that my package was delivered but when I checked it was not at my door. I checked all of the building's hallways hoping it was simply delivered to the wrong unit but no luck.

The delivery had been made to the wrong place.

I requested the delivery confirmation photos which showed that it was delivered, but not to my door. The package was left on a coffee table in the lobby. I contacted the condo board and asked for security footage and it was confirmed that another resident was seen helping herself to my sealed and addressed package.

Privacy law prevented the board from giving me a name or footage. They can only supply it to police if I make a report, but I at least now knew it was someone from our building. I printed the delivery photos and a notice saying my package was stolen, reminding that there are cameras, and posted it in the lobby.

Less than two days later I got a text at work from the board pres. telling me that the person who took my package thought it was free and wanted to return it. I told him to let her know what time I'd be home.

The thief tried to make amends.

Shortly after I got home she knocked and tried to hand me one of the five items from the package. I said where is the rest? She kept saying she made a mistake. Turns out she took my SEALED AND ADDRESSED package from the lobby, opened it, decided she only wanted one item, and PUT THE REST ON THE FREE TABLE WITH A NOTE SAYING FREE!!!!!!!

I was so angry! I said so you knew it was not on the free table, it was sealed, and when opened it was obviously brand new clothes with tags but you decided it was free?!?! She kept saying it was a mistake. HOW? It was sealed. It was NOT on the free table! She admitted this.

I told her she owes me $200 or I would just report it to police then since she gave it away. She was visibly scared at the mention of police and returned to my door with the money within 5 mins.

She wasn't sure if she had overreacted.

The original vendor, who I reported the package as stolen to, re-shipped my order, but I am keeping the money because she is either a lying thief or needs an expensive lesson in not touching what is not hers. Am I crazy? Why would anyone think this is okay????

Ultimately, she had committed a crime.

Loud-Rhubarb-1561 NTA she stole from you. Personally I wouldn't have accepted her money I would have called the non emergency line and filed a report. She got off too easy

AutumnsAshesXxX NTA. Even if it was mistakenly on the free table, opening someone else's sealed mail is a federal crime. Keep the $200. She's lucky you didn't call the police.

FivebyFive NTA, this just sounds like someone used to casually stealing, and not liking being called out on it.

She made a mistake, and she had to accept that.

starchy2ber Nta. She stole and has she to pay. It really doesn't matter you still got your stuff in the end. She humiliated herself before you and everyone who looked at that tape. I doubt she does this again

AngeloPappas I'd have reported her to the police. Who knows how many other "mistakes" she has made before getting caught.

Spicy 7997 NTA. She opened a package with someone else's name on it. That's illegal. She knew it wasn't for her. She stole it. Good on you for keeping her money.

It was a suspicious mistake to make.

kevnmartin I'm confused by her saying she thought a sealed, addressed package was free stuff. I've seen junk on the side of the road with a "free" sign on it, usually firewood or old office chairs. I can't get my head around her thought process here.
