The responses

drmike0099 I wouldn't focus too much on what happened with the other neighbor years ago. The question is whether sealing off that 8" is worth $1850 to you? It wouldn't be to me, and sounds like you're not interested either, so just send a "no thanks" and move on.
Final_Technology104 If it were me, I would also leave the 8" gap and plant a bush or something line that to "fill in the gap" on my side of the fence. Edit to add, I would plant a dwarf arborvitae to fill in the gap, they grow up to fence height. And I mean, shove that plant right in the corner on your side. She's got a lot of balls asking you to retroactively split the cost on a fence she picked out and at the price She decided to pay.

Economy-Intention-56 Tell her you're not going to do that and will just leave the gap open. If she won't budge just plant a shrub at the gap.

LoveisBaconisLove Depends. If the point of the fence is privacy, an 8" gap is something I would live with. If it's to keep a dog in, an 8" gap makes the rest of the fence a waste of money.

xRyuzakii Sounds like she s ks but you could just not tie your fence to hers and be done with it

timelessblur Make a note. You are not required to leave them enough space to maintain their fence. Just like you are not required to let them go on to your property to fix and maintaince their fence. Not your problem that they can not get to the outside of the fence any longer. You dont care about getting to yours so not your issue.

jgturbo619 Fence your entire property with fencing 6" on your property. You don't have to tie into anything. Good fences make good neighbors.

CGC424 When I put a fence in years ago, I did not tie in to my neighbor's fence. There is a two inch gap on either side. It doesn't bother me and I assume it doesn't bother them since they never mentioned it to me and have always been cordial.

disenfranchisedchild My neighbor's fence post is about a foot and a half from my fence and her fence boards come almost up to my fence, maybe an inch away. That's the way you need to do it. You don't touch somebody else's property + everything's hunky dory.

Kathykat5959 It's not 100% necessary to tie in. It can be done with an H style post on your side. Mine is not tied in to the trashy fence next to mine.

DLebedeff Put the fence on your property line. Tying in your fence to her fence would mean your fence is on her property and you are going to run the risk of difficult interactions over the fence with her and any subsequent new neighbor.

cuarc001 Paying them and then tying into their fencing on their property is just asking for a lot of trouble that just isn't going to be worth it. Sacrifice the small portion of your lot and just lose out while putting your own fence down your side of the line. They are going to take your money and still give you no rights. When things break, they will expect you to just pay with no say. Good fences make good neighbors. Leave the minimum space between the two fences for utility workers to get th

crazy_akes Best part is since you said it's already weathered once you've signed off they'll want to restrain their old fence and you'll be paying for half the cost from their "contractor" and taking their word for the cost. That'll follow this in a few months to match your new fence with the stain.
via SoccerDu25
twoscoopsofbacon You need to ask yourself if this is a shared fence, that you have rights to, or if it is their fence, and you don't. Why would they say it was a shared fence if you didn't pay for it? Seems like a reasonable ask, but also you can just not tie in and that is fine too.

Repulsive-Honey7305 How do they maintain their lawn on the side that faces your property? She can't be using an 8 in mower. Or even be walking with a trimmer. If you are letting her, stop. If you are maintaining it, stop. Then when it gets to an unruly height, go to the HOA. Or tell her thats the plan, and see if she wants to let you tie in in exchange for the free mowing I bet you've been doing.

OneBag2825 Survey before anything to know where your fence MUST end, then diddle away about the rest. Stick a shrub in each corner, but know where your lotline is so you don't extend any fence components past it and you know the true location of neighbor's. That might put out a lot of this tempest.
