When you want to watch a movie with a friend, or make a family afternoon plan by suggesting a film marathon, comedy is always the way to go. People will have fun, they will laugh, and it is the perfect way to guarantee that everyone’s going to have a great time. Putting on an overly dramatic film can be fun too, but you risk the rest of the afternoon looking like a sea of tears and philosophical thoughts. So, when you want to feel joyful, comedy’s got your back.
That said, how do you even choose a good comedy? As I said, comedic taste is quite relative, and humor is both a science and an art. Pick the wrong comedy movie during those family afternoons, and you’ll be marked for life. So, how do you even choose? What makes a comedy film good?
I don’t think it's about the comedy at all. I mean, sure, it is important; it's the core of it after all, but my favorite comedy films are not necessarily the funniest ones. The ones that hold a special place in my heart not only made me laugh when I first watched them, but they also felt meaningful and wholesome. In many ways, you could feel that the people who made them enjoyed themselves and had a great time.

Perhaps your favorite comedy movies are not funny to others. But to you, they couldn’t get any better. I truly believe this means you’ve connected with these stories much more than on a humor level, and they warm your spirit every time you watch them. Take 10 Things I Hate About You, for example. Some people find it hysterical, and others don’t get the hype. I absolutely love it. It has some pretty decent jokes, no doubt, but every time I rewatch it I feel like I’ve been invited to a world of possibility, in which everyone has a uniqueness that makes them enchanting, and things are not that serious. I hold it close to my heart because it's a story that goes way beyond a couple of punchlines. That is to say that we love the films we love –any genre, really, not just comedy– because they are not just something we happened to find on Netflix while we were bored. They have really become part of who we are, our dreams, fears, aspirations, and hopes. In other words, they have gained a place in our lives, as they reflect a part of what we love, who we are, and most importantly, who we aspire to be.
