Twitter Users Compete Over Proper Way To Solve A Tricky Equation

You might feel like your back in math class after getting caught up in this equation. Seemingly simple enough on the surface, it has stirred up quite the controversy on Twitter. People can't seem to agree, and some suggest that it's pretty much impossible to solve because the parenthesis is incorrect. What do you guys think? Is it in fact 1 OR 16.
