I just watched the welcome video on his site. It looks like a pretty cool idea. It would be interesting to see some case studies of ideas that came together. I can see applications here locally just for ways to improve our neighborhood. It can be very intimidating to suggest an idea and try to organize people. We've got a fairly active neighborhood watch group and some of us have come together to assist older folk in our neighborhood. We all pitched in one Saturday to do a major clean up of their yard as they had health(and financial) issues that prevented them from staying on top of it. We were thrilled to help out. There are plenty who could benefit from something like that and lots that would want to help. The really awkward thing is approaching someone you might help for fear of offending them. I'm sure that through networking we could grow a group of folks that want to help like that. With some word of mouth, someone close to those we might help might be able to broach the subject or the people themselves might be relieved to find that there are people who would want to help them. This is a very modest thing but I can see how the resource he describes could make it much easier. There are lots of things people in the community would be willing to help with and a forum like that could help these ideas bubble to the surface. I noticed it's a .org site. How does he envision the service be funded over time?

It's fun working with the kids and the world is a better place when youngsters have more education and opportunity. Things get much easier when the boyfriend is open to moving, too. Is it a benefit or a hassle when you straddle two countries like that? I'd imagine there are a great many people that do it but I wonder how much it complicates things. My memory fails me...did you mention what line of work he's in? Can he readily find work most any place?

Thank you for the Happy Cat fireworks my cheezfriend. Sorry I haven't given you any collectibles in a while, but you seem to collect them faster then I duplicate them. ;) Cheers :)

Wow, infinite power...what a gift! I usually work in small groups helping kids with math. More often than not, I get the butterfly chasers. These are the kids that would stare off into space watching imaginary butterflies if left to their own devices. It's great fun working with them as one has to try all kinds of imaginative things to hold their attention. Goofiness and lots of celebration for wins seems to be pretty effective. I have those in abundance so it works out. Earlier this school year I got to work with the brightest kids and teach them algebra. I certainly never got exposed to algebra when I was in 4th grade but these kids did well. I like 4th grade. The kids are old enough that you're not spending half your time babysitting and yet it's just before the hormones kick in and introduce a whole different level of challenges that I'm not prepared to deal with. ;^) I don't recall...is your boyfriend originally from Canada, too? I hope something great comes up for you back home. From the little I've read and heard, Toronto is a great city.

Thank you! Also, if your friends have stacks of unneeded Bad Kitty TP collecting dust in their closets, I'm not too proud to take those if you don't mind relaying them to me.

I'm glad your holidays treated you well. I think there's a time when it's fun to go out and be wild on NYE but ultimately sanity returns and our festivities become more sedate but no less satisfying...and we tend to remember them better and don't have to refer to police reports to fill in the details. ;^) Quiet is good. An agenda for the new year? Hmm...more of the same. I'll continue to volunteer a couple days a week at the local school and outing with Becky always fill up a good portion of my time. Now that the video for Dad's side of the family is done, we'll be moving on to my mom's side but we'll take a short break. Mix in a whole bunch of visits to help the folks out with doctor appointments and tasks around their place and I'll be about as busy as I want to be. What about for you? Will you continue a job search to get back closer to home? Are there certain areas of our countries where your field concentrates or is work fairly widespread?

If none of your friends need them, would you please send me your extra Bad Kitty TP's (page seven of your retired collectibles)? Check out my new profile write-up. Thank you.

Sigh...yep, collecties coming to an end. My holiday was nice. Over the course of two weekends we managed to get everyone together for the holiday. Mostly we hung out, watched the dog and the youngsters and enjoyed good meals. How was your time with the family? I'll bet you enjoyed it when you and your honey were able to get together again for New Years. Did you go out someplace to ring in the new year?

My friend is half-Ashkenazi Jewish [and her husband is not at all, as far as I know] ... so it seemed odd to me that she'd be tested for Tay-Sachs [isn't it one of those diseases where each parent has to contribute the gene? I only know about it from Law & Order, so I may be talking nonsense -- heh]. But whatever. The baby -- who will be 2 in Jan. -- was born 5 weeks early but has recovered from her early nativity and is developmentally "normal" and ADORABLE. And funny as all hell, too. I MISS BABIES. I used to be nanny to a pair of girlies [my boss's daughters, akshully], and before that to another family in Houston, and I've been sitting on babies [as I call it] since I was 12 ... back in the Bronze Age ... and now all of my "babies" are 10 or older! I have nieces from each sibling who are 10, and they're the youngest in their families ... so I don't get to snorgle too many babies anymore. And it's killing me! However, my Older Step-Niece From Hell [sister's step] had a baby last year, and although they couldn't spell his name correctly [she says COMPLETELY non-judgementally] -- "Zachery" -- he looks pretty cute from his pictures, and I will get to see him at Xmas. So all is not lost.

My brownies are so good because I ripped off the very best recipe I could find. Here's the big secret http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/nigella-lawson/triple-chocolate-brownies-recipe2/index.html And I really do use the best ingredients I can find. I always use Guittards Chocolate. Try it out and see if they aren't the best brownies you've ever had. Let me know. That was a cute video. For someone who wears mittens, your friend plays the guitar very well! ;^) I'm glad you get that comfy feeling with Nick's family. You'll spend LOTS of time together!

It's fun (usually) to see how our furfrenz react to new situations and surroundings. It's cool that the kittehs are spending more time curled up with you. I think that's how we picture our time with them when we think about opening our homes to them. I was crashed on the couch for a while yesterday and Becky was laying on the floor next to me. I reached out and rubbed her ears for about fifteen minutes. She NEVER sits still for that sort of thing so that was a real treat. Sugar cookies and chocolate chips are a great holiday treat. I have zero talent for decorating cookies but I love to bake. I made loaves of cinnamon-raisin bread and my neighborhood award winning brownies for some family members this last weekend. I'll do some more of that this week for friends. I'm sure it will be nice to reunite with Nick for New Years. Is this your first holiday season together? I finished the family video a week ago and spent the day printing and burning the DVDs and DVD covers. The first batch of family members saw it on Saturday and had lots of nice things to say about it. It really is a gift to have Dad telling all kinds of stories from his childhood in his own voice while we watch pictures that support the stories crossing the screen. It's not an exhaustive "here's every member of our family tree" but it does show where we came from, our moves across the country and who fought in the civil and revolutionary wars. I detail individuals starting in about 1850 including a great-great-great uncle who ran for president on the Prohibition Ticket back in 1904. I've got pictures of him and one of his campaign buttons included in the video.
