New Yorkers Wade Through Literal Cesspools to Catch the Train

Leaving the house ten years ago: Keys. Wallet. Phone.
Leaving the house in 2021: Keys. Wallet. Phone. Face mask. Hand sanitizer. Life vest. Canoe. Tetanus shot.

As Hurricane Elsa puts NYC's crumbling infrastructure to the test, New Yorkers are wading through toxic subterranean pools and flooded boroughs to get to point B. In a number of viral videos captured by people at the 157th Street subway station last night, commuters are seen attempting to protect themselves from the filthy water using trash bags, without much success. Above ground wasn't much prettier for those trying to get through actual rivers of traffic. Many turned to Twitter to express concern and criticism toward MTA and the city. New Yorkers haven't forgotten Hurricane Sandy and they certainly don't want to experience the sequel.

This Greenpeace activist was attempting to drop a big yellow balloon into the field to raise awareness of the climate crisis during a France vs Germany match when he hit a camera cable high above the pitch, forcing a tight recovery and crash landing on the field. Greenpeace has since apologized to the two audience members injured in the stunt, and Bavaria's interior minister said that the guy was lucky marksmen noticed the Greenpeace banner and didn't shoot him. With all that said, if the goal was to raise awareness, the guy's screw-up probably got more eyes on him than if the plan had succeeded.

39 Dank Ecology Memes For Earth Day Scrolling

Happy Earth Day, internet friends! We're gonna be real with you, it feels a little morbid to celebrate the Earth in the midst of ecological disaster and global pandemic—it would sort of be like singing happy birthday to someone while you throw garbage at them. That said, we all depend on this beautiful planet of ours and pessimism ain't gonna get us anywhere. The effect our individual actions have on the environment pale in comparison to the carbon footprint of major industries, but there's no harm in using this day to meditate on how we can be better, more compassionate participants of the ecosystem in our everyday lives. Today we plan to use as little energy as possible by doing absolutely nothing all day but look at memes, starting with this collection of dank ecological content. It ain't much but it's honest work.

Wind turbines are an amazing technology that rightfully deserve a ton of praise. Because wind turbines are considered renewable, they can provide power without the negative effects that come with other energy sources. But today, we're praising wind turbines by inadvertently bringing us laughs. In this video, it's revealed that 90's Room host Fred Santana believed that turbines help in the fight against climate change by...cooling down the Earth. Like fans. The revelation is met with a whole lot of understandable laughter.

People Fantasize About What Their Ideal 2021 Would Look Like

The end of 2020 is finally approaching after what felt like a whole decade of disaster and disappointment. Many are lamenting the failures of this year by looking ahead and fantasizing about what 2021 would look like if it was as good as 2020 was bad. u/ilikepintobeans posted this exact question to r/AskReddit and the general consensus was that in an ideal world, coronavirus and global warming would be 'cured.' Some redditors put a pretty entertaining sci-fi spin on their answers. Considering all that's happened and what is to come, it's safe to say that we all desire a better world for everyone.

'SJW' Puts Climate-Change Denier In His Place

Former Toronto Sun Editor Lorrie Goldstein claimed in a tweet that no "SJW" would be able to explain the actual science behind climate change. He was in for a significant amount of embarrassment when Writer and Content Strategist Karen Geier replied to the tweet with a whole arsenal of facts and evidence.

By the way, what believing in climate change has to do with being an SJW, we'll never know...

The fires in Australia have been devastating to human lives, countless species of animals, and the environment at large - so much so that the smoke from the fires is predicted to be seen around the world. New Study: Migratory Birds Are Shrinking As a Consequence of Climate Change

A University of Michigan-led study of approximately 70,000 North American migratory birds from 52 species found that body sizes have decreased and wing length has increased in all of the species since 1978.

David Willard, a Field Museum ornithologist, has measured the Windy City's dead birds since 1978. Data from his calipers and scales reveal decades-long trends in bird bodies: Their legs, on average, are growing shorter. They have lost weight. Their wings are getting slightly longer.
These changes are present in nearly all of the species he measured, according to a study of 70,716 bird specimens from almost 40 years published Wednesday in the journal Ecology Letters. Morphing birds, Willard, and his colleagues say, reflect a changing climate: "Our findings suggest that warming‐induced body size reduction is a general response to climate change, and reveal a similarly consistent and unexpected shift in body shape. We hypothesise that increasing wing length represents a compensatory adaptation to maintain migration as reductions in body size have increased the metabolic cost of flight".

Elon Musk's Tree Donation Has Memers Riled Up

Elon Musk just donated $1 million worth of trees to YouTuber MrBeast's fundraiser, which aims to raise $20 million toward climate change efforts. The campaign, called #TeamTrees, is a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. Musk, who renamed himself "Treelon" on Twitter, currently holds the record for biggest donation, followed by the likes of MrBeast, Jeffree Star, and...the entire nation of Ukraine.

Dank memers on Reddit have been going crazy meme-ing their favorite billionaire for his (supposed) charitable efforts. Below are some of our favorite examples!

Sixteen Mildly Insensitive Memes About The California Wildfires

In news that probably comes as a surprise to virtually no one, the state of California is once again on fire. The exact cause of the fires is not known for certain, but it's heavily suspected that PG&E, provider of natural gas and electricity to much of California, is behind it. PG&E has since implemented planned power outages in order to divert the fires from spreading further. Ironic, isn't it?

So while we all wait for this sh*t to blow over, let's sit back, mock PG&E, and browse through some memes.

Barbie Gets Dark In These Self-Deprecating Memes

We're all about niche meme accounts as creativity seems to be a rarity these days in the meme world. Most people just use the trending meme formats or create content that is so basic and relatable that it is boring. This is not the case for Toronto-based @dyingbutfine. Kristel Jax, the artist and writer behind the account, has been coping with mental health struggles since 2016 - the same year she created her funny, touching, and very dark meme account. Many of the memes combine images of Barbie-esque dolls paired with dark themes such as depression and denial. We love them. If you like Jax's work, we encourage you to give her a follow on Instagram and consider donating to her Patreon.
