Warning: don't browse through these memes and pics if you don't want your perceptions about life to be completely turned upside-down.
Portland comedian @jayshingle is the mastermind of the bizarre and eerily depressing "Ordinary People Memes" Instagram account. The memes pair incredibly banal text with photos of, well, very ordinary people - and the results range from amusingly relatable to slightly dark and lonely. We hesitate to refer to them as a commentary on the volume of inanely basic tweets and memes, but they're definitely a weird palate cleanser after scrolling through pandering low-effort content.
If you've missing Mr. Meme of Stonks and surreal meme fame, you're in luck! The smooth-faced character is back in these amusing "Shef" memes that roast people for thinking they can cook when they're basically only capable of typing numbers on a microwave. While we totally understand being too tired or even just hating cooking, these memes elicited a few hearty chuckles from our weary bodies.
It's Saturday, and for us that means we're still hungover (don't get old) and trying to find ways to distract ourselves from the crushing pain of our existence. That could mean turning into a veritable Netflix consumption device, or it could mean looking at memes. Or, you know, you can do both. Lord knows this fried brain isn't going to retain anything anyway.
Meme man is back, baby, and he's here to call everyone out for their low-effort content and weak AF memes. The star of many a surreal meme is getting paired with cheap laughs much like "You have entered the comedy area" memes. The memes target everyone's favorite sex number memes, as well as extremely tired trends such as "Nobody." If memers aren't careful, this format will end up being just like the jokes it mocks.
We're huge fans of surreal memes. They're unbelievably weird, make little to know sense, and yet are often visually stunning. While we're not gaining any brain cells from perusing memes of this ilk, we may get a bit of brain exercise trying to understand them. We definitely can't say the same for the memes we're generally scrolling through.
Memes used to be so simple. The O RLY owl. Chuck Norris. Impact font. Memes today would be unrecognizable to a time traveler from 2010. Between the popularity of surreal, nonsensical memes to grainy deep fried images, internet humor has taken quite a turn - a concept that the memes we've harvested tackle head-on. These examples may not be any better than the memes they are roasting, but they're definitely not wrong.
If you're a fan of super meta memes, this is the one for you. Reddit has been flirting this week with these surreal and self-aware memes. The format riffs on an actual piece from The Washington Post, replacing the original surreal meme with other surreal or deep-fried images. The dank memes may not appeal to everyone, but this is definitely a taste of some of the weirder crap you can find on the interwebs.
