Zookeepers Share Their Insider Zoo Knowledge

Zoos have to hold the title of some of the weirdest places to work. Where else do you have to deal with dangerous smelly animals as well as customers? What other job might you be briefed that the lion just ate the peacock? Zoos have the strange reality of being full of workers who are highly educated but also still have to shovel tons of chimp crap for a few dollars above minimum wage.

Here's a strange encounter we never knew we needed until this very moment.. a red panda coming face-to-face with a raccoon, and then the red panda continues to wander freely around the zoo.

Disney, are you watching this? This is the type of story the world wants to see. Or maybe not, given the trauma after 'The Fox And The Hound.'

We've definitely made the connection before that a red panda resembles a raccoon more than a panda itself, so to see the two come face-to-face with one another is probably the cutest thing we've seen in a while, no matter how short it is.

Suka the Polar Bear has recently given birth to twin cubs at the Detroit Zoo! This is amazing news, not only because polar bears are declined out in the wild, but because Suka has had two lost pregnancies in the past and this time she finally welcoming twins!

ZooBorns has some updates about the new mama and new cubs, "The cubs were born in a specially-designed, private maternity den away from the other bears. It is equipped with infrared video cameras that allow staff to monitor the mother and cubs without disturbing them. On November 19, it was observed that one of the cubs was becoming inactive and appeared to be weak. The staff allowed Suka out of the den so that the weak cub could be retrieved.

The cub, a female, was taken to the Detroit Zoo's Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex where she was examined by veterinarians and given fluids and formula. She has continued to receive around-the-clock care and bottle feeding. At two days old, she weighed 556 grams (1.2 pounds). Today, she is 5.12 kilograms (11.3 pounds), and she has graduated from an incubator to a "playpen". She will eventually go back to live in the Arctic Ring of Life habitat. It is not yet known if she can be reunited with her mother and sibling, but eventually, she will live with other bears. Meanwhile, we continue to monitor Suka and the cub she is caring for. She has been a very attentive mom; continuously nursing, grooming, and cuddling her cub, with only short water and bathroom breaks. Both cubs are currently in private, behind-the-scenes areas and are not viewable by guests."

We pray that this newborn cub is healthy and living a long happy life alongside her mom and sibling!

We love it when animals within zoos get a special treat for any occasion or holiday. Sometimes, zoos provide animals with popsicles when it gets way too hot out! It's the little things and we're positive these animals are thankful for any little gift or treat that comes their way.

This year, Syndey's Taronga Zoo, in Australia, has decided to get the animals into the holiday spirit with some classic Christmas decor, and an early delivery of Christmas-themed food!

Happy Holidays!

Giant Panda Cub Gets Named And Its A True 'Little Miracle'

We've an update about one of the most positive stories to come out of 2020, and the update is just as wholesome as the original story. The (tiny) giant panda cub that was born at the Smithsonian's National Zoo three weeks ago has finally gotten a name, and it is the most appropriate and cutest name of all. Xiao Qi Ji is his name in Chinese, but it translates to 'little miracle' in English.

The little giant panda has gone absolutely viral in the past couple of weeks after a video of his miraculous birth was released by the zoo, and since the world fell in love with the cub, the zoo decided to let the world participate in naming him. Of course, the internet does not disappoint when it comes to baby animals.

We were given a choice of 4 names, and after three weeks and nearly 135,000 votes that have been cast, the adorable name 'little miracle' was chosen. The long waiting period was not an accident, it is part of Chinese tradition to wait 100 days before naming the cub. We wish the little cub luck and prosperity, and for his mother, Mei Xiang, to have many more adorable healthy cubs in the future!

One of our favorite things in the world is interspecies friendships. They're so cool and interesting, and the circumstances which led to those friendships are just as interesting if not more. The latest unlikely friendship that we've come across is one that seems like it's straight out of a Disney movie - a meerkat, a hyena cub, and two lion cubs.

Yeah, we know, aren't hyenas and lions mortal enemies? And isn't a meerkat merely a snack for hyenas and lions? Normally, the answer to both would be yes. But in this situation, under their special circumstances, in a zoo in South Africa, a strange and beautiful friendship has formed.

These adorable animals all met when they were just babies. As they explain in the video: Qala - the hyena - arrived at the zoo as an orphan after her mom was caught in a farmer's trap, Safari and Sussie - the lion cubs - were rejected by their mother at birth, and Pokkel - the coolest meerkat in the world - was found simply wandering alone without its family.

Their friendship may not last forever, since both the lions and hyena are growing, and their instincts should be kicking in soon, so even playfighting might become dangerous for Pokkel. But for now, this is one of the cutest unlikely friendships we've ever seen, and we're glad that these cuties are enjoying each other.

White Lion and Bengal Tiger Best Friends Since Childhood

Istanbul's Aslan Park is home to two big cats who have become best friends. A white lion called Pamuk and a Bengal tiger called Toby who are both only 18 months old have taken over our hearts with their adorable friendship. When they were just  four months old, the zookeepers attempted to separate the cubs, but the cubs had other plans.

Daily News reports that Gökmen Aydın, the general par manager, said: "We wanted to separate them as both belong to different species. Then we realize uneasiness in animals. We started to think about the cause. When they got together later, we saw that they want to stay with each other. They became friends within four months," and we just can't help but awww.

Pamuk and Toby sleep most day, like all cats do, but they play together a lot and absolutely hate being separated for any reason whatsoever. "They sometimes sleep while hugging each other," added Aydın, and okay, que some more awws right about now. We wish them a long friendship even as they grow older and as much happiness as they have in general. Their story brought us immense happiness for sure.

Check out pictures of Pamuk and Toby together below! And if you're interested in more happy friendships between species, take a look at this Pitbull and rescued fox cub who are total BFFs.

Happy Halloween! One thing we absolutely adore is when animals get holiday or weather-related gifts or treats!

During the blasting heat of summer, we've seen zoos treat the animals with frozen popsicles specialized for each individual animal. It's thoughtful and delightful to see the animals nomming on their frozen goodies. This year, Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, Illinois, treated their animals to a Halloween treat! A pumpkin for them to eat, munch, play with, whatever they wish to do with it is completely up to them. Most of the animal's reaction to the pumpkin is just too good and will leave a giant smile plastered on your face.

Here's a message from Brookfield Zoo, this Halloween, "Everybody likes to carve their Halloween pumpkins differently. Some of us like to take our time, some just start ripping it apart, others like to work together, and some prefer to work alone. However you carve your pumpkin, #BrookfieldZoo hopes you have a Happy Halloween!"
