Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat says Sherlock Holmes' greatest nemesis, Moriarty, won't be returning next season.

Moffat told Radio Times, "We need to find new villains, we need to find new ideas, otherwise the show doesn't keep growing."

He pointed out that Moriarty was "a one-shot deal" in Arthur Conan Doyle's original Holmes stories, and said he doesn't want the BBC series to "turn into a show that's about one villain and one hero."

The third series of Sherlock, which will likely air in 2013, will introduce other great villains from the books, but Moffat is keeping their identities secret for now.
