If you've been waiting for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Peter Laird to publicly denounce Michael Bay's declaration that the Turtles will be "from an alien race" in the next movie, prepare to be disappointed.
Laird has commented on the controversy, but his position is one of skeptical support for Bay's rewriting of the famous mutant ooze origin story.
"I would actually encourage TMNT fans to swallow the 'chill pill' Mr. Bay recently suggested they take, and wait and see what might come out of this seemingly ill-conceived plan," Laird wrote on his personal blog.
He says that although the idea is unlikely to work, it might not be as awful as it sounds, because "someone has come up with a way to have as many freakin' Turtles as they want. I mean, if the TMNT are actually members of an alien race, there could be a whole PLANET of them!"
Laird says he played around with adding a fifth turtle, but couldn't figure out a plausible explanation that wasn't "the harebrained 'there was an extra turtle in the bowl, etc.' idea."
Well, "aliens" isn't an extra turtle in the bowl, but it remains to be seen whether it will be any less harebrained.
