Any news about Lord of the Rings gets my geeky heart racing. Ian McKellen standing on a stage, teasing that Gandalf and Frodo will show up in Andy Serkis' upcoming The Hunt for Gollum? That's the kind of headline that should send me running for my wizard hat. And yet… I'm finding it really hard to be as excited as I want to be.
Don't get me wrong - Andy Serkis is a true artist, and if anyone deserves a shot at directing in Middle-earth, it's him. And Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are Gandalf and Frodo. No one could ever replace them. The problem is, I haven't seen a single Middle-earth project since the original trilogy that captured even a flicker of that magic. Not The Hobbit films (and yes, those had McKellen, Wood, and Peter Jackson himself back on board). Not Amazon's billion-dollar Rings of Power series either.
So excuse me if I'm not leaping up and down at the news of The Hunt for Gollum. But here's the thing - everyone involved in these new films are immensely talented and have a genuine love for Tolkien's world. And that's enough to keep me cautiously optimistic.
If they can recapture even a fraction of what made those first movies so timeless, then maybe, just maybe, we'll get another taste of that old Middle-earth magic. Until then… I'll keep my expectations at Hobbit height.
