Pokémon and Tamagotchi are two of the biggest icons of the 90s, so the fact that it took this long for someone to smash them together feels almost criminal. Thankfully, Takara Tomy finally heard our collective childhood screams and has unleashed the Poké-nade Monster Ball in Japan - basically a Tamagotchi stuffed inside a Poké Ball, and yes, I want one immediately.
You can pick from seven starter Pokémon - Pikachu, Eevee, Lucario, Fuecoco, Sprigatito, Sylveon, and Quaxly - and then raise them, pet them, battle them, and play little games with them. And when I say "pet," I don't mean button-mashing. The top of the Poké Ball is touch-sensitive, so you actually stroke your Pokémon like some kind of adorable digital Furby. Different strokes give different reactions. Yes, this is the future we were promised.
The Poké-nade launches in Japan on October 11 for about $50, and preorders are already gone. No word yet on a global release, but please, Nintendo, Takara Tomy, whoever's in charge of this - don't make me import one. I need to pet my Sprigatito in peace.
