So, it's official: Matt Reeves confirmed that The Batman movies exist in DC's "Elseworlds" category, meaning they're completely separate from James Gunn's shiny new DCU. And you know what? I'm totally fine with that. In fact, I'm relieved.
I loved The Batman - the grimy streets of Gotham, the noir detective vibe, the grounded villains. And I also really liked what we've seen so far from Gunn's Superman, which feels bright, hopeful, and unapologetically comic book-y. But these two worlds? They don't mix. At all.
Sure, Batman has always been the sad, brooding loner while Superman is the ultimate boy scout, but tonally these movies feel like they're playing on completely different planets. I can't imagine this new Superman, with all his earnestness and slightly goofy charm, being taken seriously in Reeves' Gotham where serial killers lurk in every shadow. And on the flip side, I can't picture Pattinson's Batman standing next to quippy heroes from the new Metropolis lineup - it would feel like oil and water.
So yeah, keep them separate. Let Reeves finish the story he set out to tell without having to shoehorn in cameos, and let Gunn build his DCU playground. Not every toy needs to be in the same box.
But in case you were wondering if we'll ever see Pattinson's Batman make an appearance in Gunn's new DCU - The answer is no. Who will be the new Batman? That remains to be seen.
