Grandma gifts granddaughter her historic home, then demands it back after she spends $100K on renovations: ‘She said she'll see me in court’

A dream home can quickly become complicated when a family gift comes with invisible strings attached.

Receiving her grandmother's historic home felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but years later, the gift has become the center of a family dispute. After uncovering mold, structural damage, and investing nearly $100,000 in renovations, the homeowner was stunned when her grandmother demanded the house back, accusing her of ruining it and threatening legal action.

Some things will never be easy to understand for me. I can picture this situation in my family, and I cannot imagine my grandmother regretting gifting me her home and demanding it back after I spent thousands of dollars trying to fix it. Not only that, but she would never demand anything from me after explicitly giving me the house as a gift.

But since this is not about my own family, I'll try to understand what's going on in this situation right here. According to the details that the OP mentioned, the grandma never tried to fix the home to make it safe and have it checked: she only cared about the way it looked, and that's it. Since the woman and her kids moved in, she started fixing it and making it safe and more durable over time. Let's not forget it's a 30-year-old home: it must certainly need a makeover.

I guess that the old lady realized the beauty of the home and remembered how important it was to her, and the RV and her condo could never compare to that house, and that's why she wants it back. Of course, this is not what she's saying out loud, because there's no way you can regret a decision you make about gifting your granddaughter a house. 

The issue is really getting out of hand because now the old lady says she is going to be suing the woman to get the house back, since she stated that the renovations ruined the property and that she's not taking care of the yard as she promised. Really dumb argument if you ask me, but I hope they can have this whole mess sorted out before getting the justice involved.
