So, the God of War show is officially happening. Not just happening, but happening enough that Amazon looked at the pitch, looked at the budget, looked at Kratos shouting BOY in 4K Dolby Vision, and said sure, take two seasons. Confident energy. Bold energy. Slightly terrifying energy for those of us who see God of War as something more than polygonal combat and dad strength.
Because here is the thing. God of War 2018 and Ragnarok are not just games for me. They are emotional archaeology. I was Atreus's age when I lost my mother, and now my own son is Atreus's age. These games cracked open parts of grief and healing that I did not even know were still locked away. When people say video games can't be art, I want to hand them a Leviathan Axe and point them toward this story. So yes, I am nervous. An animated adaptation would have felt safer. Live action feels like it could turn cringy very fast.
But then you look at the talent. Ronald D Moore is running the show. Frederick E O Toye is directing the first episodes, fresh off an Emmy win for Shogun. Pre production is underway in Vancouver. Casting has started for Kratos and Atreus. This is not a casual attempt. This is a studio planting a big golden handprint on this project and saying we are doing this.
So I am cautiously optimistic. Nervous, yes. Protective, absolutely. But hopeful. Because if they get this right, if they capture even a fraction of the heart of Kratos and Atreus's journey, we are in for something extraordinary.
