TikTokers Attempt to Run Just Like Iconic Pirates of the Caribbean Character, Jack Sparrow

Pirates of the Caribbean was a top-grossing, life changing film for many and, of course, starred the world’s worst pirate– Jack Sparrow. Whether it was because of drunkenness, Caribbean heat waves, or dating life with Amber Heard, Johnny Depp’s performance as Jack is iconic. Everyone remembers their favorite dusty pirate, careening across the screen with his hands flailing, legs flopping, and head tipping precariously backward.

Lately, TikTokers have been inspired by Johnny’s performance, attempting their own versions of the Jack Sparrow run. Potentially fueled by alcohol and rising pool temperatures, Dallin and Bella, a TikTok duo, made their mark on the trend, by coercing a friendly competition between their friends to see who has the best (or is it worst?) running form.

Who did the best Jack Sparrow?

In the video, Dallin and Bella challenge their friends to doddle along the pool's edge, toes pointed, knees high, and heads bobbling, almost as if they're balancing a mai tai on their chest. It seems like the more out of control each limb is, the more on-point the running style appears. Not only that, but the swaying palms in the background really complete the Caribbean picture that we’re all looking for in this video.

Watching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies as an adult further solidifies the accuracy of Johnny Depp’s portrayal of our doomed hero. Jack Sparrow is a rum-drinking, swashbuckling, teetering-in-his-boots type of figure to begin with, but paired with a running style that would make any track coach faint, his character becomes more and more endearing. Not to mention, the complete plausibility of this feeble running style, which can be confirmed by anyone who has had a few too many cocktails and tried to do... well… anything.

The comical aspect of the run is a key factor. In the movies, Jack is oftentimes running from hoards of angry tribesmen or groups of furious pirates - both are not ideal situations. Somehow, through the heroic magic of movies, Jack always escapes with dexterous speed, despite the inefficient swinging of limbs and nonsensical movement. Like Wiley the Coyote and the Roadrunner, he can never be caught.

Quite frankly, Johnny Depp’s performance is unmatched and there is nobody in this world who can run drunkenly just like him. We can chase the dream all we want, but the true form is a secret that we will never unlock.

May Dallin and Bella always remember the day that they almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow.
