Tie dyeing is a fashion trend that keep on coming back, and right now it's back strong (some would argue it never went out of fashion). Whether you're a die-hard tie dyer or have never done it before, tie dyeing is an awesome way to make your clothes unique and funky. It's also something you can do at home, with only a few materials. If you're interested in funking up some bland clothes, check out our tie dyeing tutorial below, or see our tutorial for the crumpled style.
Tie dyeing is easy to do at home, and you'll only need a few materials. They are the following:
First, wet your white item you want to dye (for the purposes of this article I'll call it a t-shirt). Ring it out so the t-shirt is damp but not dripping wet.
If you want to test the dyes before using them, you can use a spare piece of material to see how they turn out. Or if you're adventurous, skip this step and go to Step 3.
Lay the t-shirt on a flat surface and start making a spiral shape from the center of the t-shirt.
Continue twisting the t-shirt around until it forms a roughly circular shape.
Take 3 or 4 rubber bands and stretch them over the t-shirt, intersecting in the middle like a cake. This will hold the t-shirt together.
Put on your rubber gloves, and start squirting the dye onto the t-shirt. You can squirt one color per wedge section, or just freestyle it. It's up to you.
Turn the t-shirt over and color the other side.
Once you have finished coloring the t-shirt, place it inside a plastic bag or zip-lock bag and leave it overnight, for around 8 hours.
After leaving the t-shirt overnight, take it outside of the ziplock bag. The colors will have had time to soak into the t-shirt.
Rinse the t-shirt in cool water until the dye stops running. Ring out the t-shirt and let it dry naturally.
Show off your new tie dyed t-shirt to your friends!
