Work politics are weird, and having a shady figure with unclear motives seems pretty standard for having a boss at all. Redditor u/Username_Tim posted to the popular community r/MaliciousCompliance to share how they realized well after the fact that they once served as a mere pawn in an old supervisor's own malicious compliance when they were asked to drive a mill into overtime to bring up production. OP remembers affirming that this would only cause the company to lose money, but he was ignored at the time — only to finally understand years later that his old supervisor was proving a point to his boss because he was frustrated that the owner brought in an outside consultant to help out.
Sort of weird and deceptive, but also clever and effective. It must feel weird to realize you were a pawn in someone else's game and didn't even know it. For a boss with a more direct approach, here's a boss who used an eye gag to remove problem customers.
