People Expose The Sexist Assumptions Google Translate Makes

  • 1

Dora Vargha expressed her major disappointment with google translate because her language, Hungarian, is not gendered, yet Google Translate likes to make 'adjustments' when it comes to translating. Instances like these are causing people to question what network controls Google Translate, and why does it have such sexist assumptions? Is it really just a neutral robot?

Twitter user Bani Haykal even took it upon himself to make a short film showcasing the choice Google Translate makes when it comes to translating the Malay language. You can see how seemingly intentional everything looks, and how quickly Google believes you meant something else. It's definitely sketchy.

Font - Dr. Stephanie Lovett @uffishthot ... Replying to @DoraVargha Great example of how everyone thinks algorithms are neutral and will fix human biases but actually they reinforce and amplify them. Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez has a lot of data about this in, for example, hiring 5:42 PM · Mar 20, 2021 · Twitter for iPhone

Font - Léa ... @la_lea_la Replying to @DoraVargha To be fair it's not Google's fault. It's using a statistical language model build from data scrapped from the web. There are huge efforts in tha machine learning community to degender biases like this, but it's not easy. 3:49 PM · Mar 20, 2021 · Twitter for Android

Some people don't think this is an issue at all

Font - Sarion Bowers ... @SarionBowers Replying to @la_lea_la and @DoraVargha But this is exactly the issue with Al/ML they use existing data which reflect all the biases and prejudices of the human race and then bakes them in. It absolutely is Google's fault because they know, as do we all, that the data are biased and they need to do better. 5:06 PM · Mar 20, 2021 · Twitter for Android

Rectangle - Allie Morgan @grumpwitch Replying to @ApogeeEngUK and @DoraVargha The "rational reason" is almost always sexist data in, sexist data out. 1:31 PM · Mar 20, 2021 · Twitter for Android

Font - Feature Envy Productions @feature_envy ... Replying to @DoraVargha Yeah this is a great example of how Al isn't really 100% artificial.Algorithms like this are trained on existing data. So if Google isn't doing human checks of that data to look for bias, the Al will be trained to reinforce bias. Same with like chat bots turning racist. 6:03 PM · Mar 20, 2021 · Twitter Web App
