Joint flexibility is a trait that provides a special advantage to dancers and athletes. But for the most part, it just looks insane. Some people can bend their fingers all the way back without pain. I tried this when I was 5 years and it worked - but then it got stuck. A doctor had to unhinge my thumb...ouch. Joint hypermobility affects approximately 20% of the population. People with it have an unusually large range of motion. Hypermobile people can often touch their thumb to their inner forearm or place their hands flat on the floor without bending their knees. The trait appears to be genetic and is a result of variation in collagen, the main structural protein of connective tissue. We've made a list of some funky double-jointed people. Try not to flinch too hard from the cursed images.
