The concept of "empaths" is nearly as obnoxious and eyeroll-inducing as "indigo children." Sure, we know that "highly sensitive people" exist, but it isn't possible that every teenage with a TikTok and a couple crystals falls into the "empath" category. According to the internet, empaths feel more empathy than most people - they're more attuned to the emotions of the people around them. But most people think that it's a cringey way for people to make their feelings seem like something special. And over the past few years, there's been a huge increase in people who identify themselves in this way. The phenomenon is so real that Vice even wrote an article about it.
Since the word has its enemies, it's not uncommon for people to roast so-called empaths on Twitter or in memes. Twitter users have been going in especially hard this week by ironically roleplaying as the super sensitive souls. They're pretty ridiculous, but also a fun way to mock the self-absorbed ways of people that want you to think that they're emotionally unique.
