Pets Who Have Been Returned To Shelters Finally Finding Forever Homes (Tweets)

One of the only things online that are always, always guaranteed to put smiles on our faces are animal adoption stories. We cannot help but love them - the stories and the animals. Seeing an animal find its forever home is such a wholesome and heartwarming thing, and every animal adoption story is valuable to us. 

With that said, there are some adoption stories that fill our hearts with joy more than others. Like, stories of people changing their minds and adopting a senior pet at the last second when they initially planned to take a baby, or stories of humans being chosen and adopted by strays and taking them in. And today, another type of story joins this bunch - stories of pets finally finding their forever homes after being returned back to shelters multiple times.

    We would like to start by saying that we are so, so thankful to every person in this thread who has adopted one of these pets. We know that pets getting returned to shelter can be seen as a reason to not take them in, for there had to be some reason that they were returned in the first place, but that is not always the case, and we are thankful that you even took these beauties into consideration in the first place.

    Sometimes, the reason that these pets are taken back in is because someone adopted them when they shouldn't have, and now they regret it, or because they are not the friendliest, or because they have some stress-induced behavioral problems. All of these things can be worked on and respected. Like these boys. It took some time for them to learn to trust their humans, but eventually, they did.

    Jaw - Nick Gorton, MD ... @RNickGorton Replying to @michaelscat2 Pepe (aka angry meatloaf) was returned 3 times, b/c he's a little jerk that used to run away all the time, hogs the whole bed, knocks over the trash to get food, & pees on your stuff if he's angry at you. But if we adopt a shelter pet it's forever even if he is a little bastard.

    Cat - LilSushiRoll ... @LillySushi Replying to @michaelscat2 I found buster on a walk during shut in. He'd ran away from an abusive home that gave him a fucked up eye, jaw, and teeth. Among other issues. He was dirty and skinny. I've had him 11/2 years now. He's been fixed up and this is his forever home now.

    Cat - LilSushiRoll ... @LillySushi Replying to @LillySushi and @michaelscat2 Roux was also returned to the shelter twice, and ran away from an abusive adopter BACK to the shelter himself too. Our friend started fostering him and we ended up with him. He didn't get along w/ other pets and would attack all cats, but not buster! They get each other.

He climbed into my backyard skinny, covered with mange, and FIV+ after living on the streets for months. That was 8 years ago, and he's had my heart ever since.

When I brought him home from the shelter in 2008 they told me that he'd been returned twice and if he came back a third time, he'd be put to sleep. He went on to be part of my family for 14 years.
