    "Insurance for general liability (umbrella policy) is indeed a good move as it will cover expenses above and beyond a homeowner policy and it's generally inexpensive.

    But make sure you don't announce that you have it. Attorneys will generally be reluctant to take a weak case (such as your neighbor's would be) because of the slim chance of collecting. When they know there's an insurance company available to pay damages they may take the case hoping to get a settlement.

    Be aware also that if it's the insurance company that will make the payout, they also decide whether or not to settle. You may want to fight a case on general principle but the insurer may want to settle and get it over with."
