'Everyone thought he was going to destroy King's Landing, but what if he wasn't?': New theory on the Mad King sparks debate with 'Game of Thrones' fanatics

Fans of Game of Thrones have always had theories about their beloved characters—whether you're a fan of the books, show, or both, the storyline always leaves room for more and more possibilities that were never shared. Recently, a fan of both the books and series had an epiphany while watching the newest official GoT cannon House of the Dragon. His theory is simply, yet goes deep into the character of “the Mad King.” (Warning, spoilers all over.)

If you live under a rock and have never seen Game of Thrones then, this will probably all be gibberish to you, but to the fans this is a big deal. This guy theorizes that the Mad King wasn't being malicious when he uttered his last words as “burn them all,” but, in fact, it was a warning of the White Walkers to come.

“Alright, so hear me out on this. I just thought about this [and] I think it makes a lot of sense. Episode One House of the Dragon we learn that every king knows about the White Walkers and that we need to prepare to take them on because it's gonna be a thing. But during the rebellion, when Robert ends up usurping the Mad King the last thing the Mad King says is ‘burn them all.’ He had all this wildfire made because everyone thought he was going to destroy King's Landing. But what if he wasn't? What if he was only getting ready?? While the Mad King was a f*cking psycho, what if he was just getting ready for the White Walkers and his last words weren't just ‘burn them all’ like 'kill everyone,' but [actually] a warning that you need to be ready for the White Walkers and kill them with fire. The Mad King was mad, but he had a plan.”

Some are completely onboard with this new theory, using the beginning of the House of the Dragon series as a good enough reason for it to be possibly true. However, others strongly disagree saying it would completely destroy the story line of the entire GoT world.

“No..... He wanted to destroy kings landing. This isn’t up for debate as it’s perfectly cannon,” one user and GoT fanatic commented.

“He was 1000% talking about King's Landing,” another disbeliever added.

One even adds that they like the theory, but it doesn't make sense because “at the point in time the Mad King was at, didn’t everyone believe the White Walkers to just be a fairytale type myth?”

However, people who are for the theory absolutely love it. One fan added to the theory: “What if Bran went into his memories and told him what would happen and it drove him crazy and all he could say is ‘burn them all’??”

The theory even sparked another couple of fans to get deep into conversation about what caused the White Walkers to start South:

“I just now realized Roberts Rebellion is what cause the White Walkers to start South. See I think they waited while a Targaryen was on the thrown. Once Robert took the crown they started, slowly, marching south and once they started marching south magic returned and the dragons could be born.”

“Idk about this cause the mad king era didn't have dragons so the threat/interest wasn't really there... until Dany.”

“Buts it’s after Robert takes the thrown that wildlings start moving south due to a ‘threat.’ That tells me that’s when walkers went on the move.”

“True which brings light to the words ‘a dragon should always sit on the iron throne,' it was a must so the walker won't come.”

“Exactly!”

Like I said, the fan theories are endless when it comes to anything Game of Thrones-related, but the fandom for this series is strong and sometimes these theories end up being the truth…
