8 Random But Effective Places to Meet Men

  • The Beach

Ever noticed the silent type sitting with a good book in their hands at the beach? Nothing, but an apple and some sunscreen to keep them company? Yeah, me too. Don't bother those people. I'm talking about the fun volleyball players that are full of zest. The kite surfer that just returned to shore from their wind-whipping adventure. The best opening line is to ask them to take your photo. No one ever says no to this. Natural conversation 90% of the time follows with ease. If not, at least you have a cool beach photo that was taken by a hottie.

  • Museum Tour

Without fail, every time I signed up for a museum tour, most of the time free, I met someone super quirky and interesting and very quickly hit it off with them. This can be you. All it takes is noticing which art or artifact strikes both your fancies. Once you notice the commonality, it should be easy to strike up a conversation or at the very least break the ice by saying, "I know we're not really supposed to talk on these tours and all, but this (enter contemporary artist's name) really makes me hungry for (enter food that the confusing art is shaped as)."

  • Instagram

This needs to be really specific. I've met some wonderful people after searching very specific locations from the geo-tags, either a fun hike I've been on or a cool birding spot that not many know of. Reaching out to recent taggers of said location may be a bit risky, but the common ground is already built in, so you have that going for you. Obviously, vet the user as best as possible, and only send a message if you're comfortable doing so. Leave the rest up to fate.

  • Cat Cafes

Cat cafes are a million times better than Starbucks simply because they have furry feline friends in them. There's other reasons too, though. Like, how about the fact that it's forced interactivity? Say, you want to trade the kitty sitting on your lap for the one sitting on some cutie's lap? There's your one-liner right there, "Hey, you want to trade?"

  • Libraries and Book Festivals

Calling all book nerds! Libraries (and book festivals—let's not forget those!) are the best places to entertain some Elizabethan lingo and Twilight fan fiction. From the cute, and hopefully available to date, tote bag sellers to the question-askers at bookish panels…this all could be the making of a truly happy ever after tale.

  • Concert

Likely, you won't be attending a concert alone, but your group of concert goer friends can invite another group of concert goers for drinks afterwards. I can nearly guarantee you there'll be at least one interesting face that'll catch your eye.

  • Protests

This one goes out to all the wondrous youths out there. Those with a lot of passion and love to exercise their freedom of speech. You're not only a concerned citizen, you truly are an advocate for all that is right (or wrong) in our society and intend to bring these issues to the surface. What better way than connecting to other like-minded individuals than attend an upcoming protest and keeping an eye out for a single guy who's just as impassioned as yourself?

  • Waiting Room

This locale is definitely up for debate, but purely based on the origin meeting story of a friendly couple I know, I feel it's worth mentioning. They were in the hospital waiting room, both visiting family members who've just gotten their tonsils removed. They locked eyes, got some bad coffee together from the cafeteria, and the rest is history. But don't limit a potential mate to just hospital waiting rooms. The DMV and other bureaucratic offices will do fine as well.
