The ASPCA estimates there are tens of millions of feral and stray cats roaming neighborhoods and wooded areas throughout the United States. Many of these cats avoid people; however, some friendly felines yearn for human interaction and a chance to have a warm cardboard box by the window to sit in. Still, others seek to become fully-fledged members of families full of playmates.
On April 4, Muffin arrived at the Hanover County Animal Control (HCAC) after being caught as a stray by a Mechanicsville, Virginia, citizen. The grey and white domestic long-hair was given a good bill of health by staff as there were no signs of injury, malnutrition, or neglect. The only thing Muffin had to overcome was a dirty coat.
Story written by Alex Lemieux.
Speaking with HCAC Animal Facility Manager Andrew Hodnett, he speculated that Muffin had been a cared-for outside cat his whole life. Unfortunately, there were no inquiries from his owner after a stray hold was placed on Muffin, so now he's looking for a new home.
Andrew noted that Muffin arrived at the shelter with "a friendly disposition and demeanor," which has warmed the hearts of the entire staff. Muffin isn't one to sit and waste the day away as he's always trying to coax attention, rubbing his head against the side of his cage. He makes sure he gets his fair share of pets and scratches before everyone goes home at the end of the day.
"I think he's a very outgoing and loving cat," Andrew said. "He loves attention; he loves people."
As an inherently energetic and curious cat, Muffin will surely entertain whoever picks this fervid feline as the next addition to their family. Nevertheless, this cat may not be one to sit in boxes by the window or lay on the couch all day.
"He's not your typical lap cat who just lays around," Andrew expressed. "He has more energy. If someone is looking for an active cat, he'd be perfect."
Although Muffin's future prospects look bright, Andrew illustrated that Muffin represents the need to spay and neuter domestic cats, especially outdoor ones. While clusters of neighborhood strays can get many excited to feed and watch over, it presents a situation that can be avoided to give cats everywhere a better life.
