While many cat siblings may be linked together by birth into the same family, some become brothers or sisters later in life. The definition of family is not solely based on initial conditions but established through the people, or cats, you meet.
Desdemona and Parka are two 11-week-old kittens that were found as strays weeks ago in June. They were located in two different spots and rescued by two separate caring citizens, and taken to the Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC). However, as they grew in the shelter, the two kittens hadn't officially met yet.
Story written by Alex Lemieux.
Parka, a Calico, had earned a reputation with her caretakers as an energetic, playful feline. The RACC and Parka's foster parents thought it would be a good idea to expand the young kitten's social surroundings.
"Parka needed a friend," said RACC Communications Coordinator Robin Young. She explained that Desdemona, who was in an ISO room in the shelter, was picked to be Parka's playmate, and they hoped they would be a match.
Once Desdemona, a black and white shorthair, was ready to be transferred to a foster home, Parka greeted her with delight. The two quickly became sisters.
"They became instant buddies," Robin said. "Now, we'll keep them as a bonded pair."
The kittens are now old enough to be adopted and will continue learning about each other in their new home. Robin explained that Desdemona and Parka shouldn't be relegated to cat-savvy homes.
"They're friendly, and they're social," she said. "They'll fit in almost anywhere."
RACC is even offering future cat parents the opportunity to take home the duo with only one adoption fee.
