A daughter refused her father's requests to purchase an HDMI cable with her discount for usage in the family household. The employee purchasing policy expressly forbids receiving compensation for any purchases and the daughter was determined to honor the strictest interpretation of the policy. It certainly comes across in the post as if she is just trying to spite her father and taking any excuse possible not to purchase him the cable he is after. Why can't she just buy it for him as a gift… It's not like he's after one of those gold-plated scam cables from the mid-2000s that cost hundreds of dollars and promised ridiculously bogus performance improvements.
The thread was posted to Reddit's r/AITA (Am I the A-Hole) subreddit by the daughter, u/Solaris_Luna, who is wondering if she is in the wrong for refusing to purchase her father the cable.
Voters ended up deciding that she was, ultimately, in the wrong in the events described. However, that did not stop there from being a high amount of varying opinions in the comments.
"Why wouldn't you use your discount for your family? It's not like you're buying it to sell it to your dad for a profit. In my opinion YTA." declared ZonkedTheBoy.
"YTA. It's not that you're reselling the items for profit," said moroco1829. "Your father is asking to save some bucks, but it seems you're being petty with him to spite him, due to your bad relationship."
"Don't think the cable is the real issue here, but in the context of the post… ESH," decided ABeerAndABook. "The rule is in place to prevent abuse from reselling for profit. A one time purchase of an HDMI cable is not suspicious at all and a perfectly reasonable purchase for OP's use at home. Getting privately reimbursed by dad for it is neither a violation or something the company is likely to find out about (unlike, say, reselling multiple cables on marketplace above purchase cost). Dad's reaction, however, was a cross between overly dramatic and potentially abusive, but I understand why he's frustrated. Doesn't excuse his actions though."
