Katrina Johnson was on vacation in Hawai'i when she and her mom reached the home where they would be lodging for their mother-daughter retreat. Upon arrival, they noticed another presence on the property and were shocked at what they found.

With thousands of feral and stray cats, the islands of Hawai'i and their cat rescue groups are struggling to answer every call for care and locate every frightened feline. Luckily, Katrina, a former cat foster mom herself, knew she had to act fast to give the kitten a chance at survival.

Severely dehydrated, emaciated, and suffering from an infection, the tiny kitty looked like he didn't have much time left. No one knew how long he had been hiding in the garage.

"I looked on social media to try and find somebody to take him to," Katrina explained. "It was 10:00 at night, and I didn't know if he was going to make it. He was in a really bad condition."

Fortunately, the Hawaiian Islands are home to an extraordinary network of animal caregivers and dedicated partners on a mission to help every cat in need. Not long after scrolling through Facebook, Katrina found Lucky Paws Animal Foundation, a volunteer organization that helps distressed felines on Oahu by rescuing, rehabbing, and adopting them to loving homes.

"The owner, Chris, had us bring him into the shelter around midnight," Katrina said. Chris carefully cleaned up the tiny feline, applied a topical medicine to his swollen eyes, and gave him some much-needed food and water.

They determined the kitten was roughly five weeks old. At that point in their growth cycle, kittens should weigh at least 19 ounces to be considered in good health. Yet, the kitten, big enough to fit in the palm of your hand, barely registered on the scale at a measly seven ounces.

It's presumed the kitten's mother was hit by a car, per verbal reports from locals. As no other kittens were found in the area, he is the lone survivor of his litter.

The kitten will continue to receive medical care and put on weight at Lucky Paws. After he's given a clean bill of health, he'll be available for adoption.

Dobby, they dubbed him, was recently taken out of an incubator he was relegated to for more than a week.

"He's been growing and getting healthier, and his eyes have opened now, and he seems to be able to see, Katrina elucidated. "It's good to see that he survived. He's definitely a tough little guy."
