A worker uploaded this viral image of a sign they posted at the coffee shop where they work. The sign instructs patrons not to leave tips as they will be stolen by the owner of the coffee shop. "I'm probably going to be fired for this… but I don't care," the employee claims in the title of their thread.
The photo was posted to Reddit's r/antiwork subreddit by Reddit user u/Cherry_P0pper, who says they work at a "local" coffee shop in southern Virginia.
They explain that the boss takes all the tips given to the workers. They cannot even pocket any tips they receive as the boss "Checks our wallets and pockets each shift" for cash and claims any cash he finds as his own.
The employee has also reported that they have been subject to verbal abuse from their employer and that their "checks keep bouncing." They have been forbidden from discussing this issue with others and have reportedly been told that they need to "put the business before their own finances."
"I do take down the sign when he comes in at close, but it's only a matter of time before he finds out," the worker explains in a later comment. "I will not be naming the company until I find another job; expect an update in about a month. We are a local business in the southern Virginia area, and that is ALL I will say for now."
Readers were outraged, which sparked much of the discussion surrounding the photo. Some readers shared times that they have seen workers resort to these means.
"This local place I go to, the cashier had a note in her palm that said 'Don't tip, [the] owner steals," commented Anthrax4breakfast. "That's some sad sh*t."
Others offered advice on how to otherwise deal with the situation.
"Even better, call your local DOL and report it," commented user umassmza. "That's illegal."
