'I've been getting HOA letters about fees': Guy refuses to join HOA and incurs their wrath

The appropriately named Reddit user u/nexttohoa was faced with a situation in which his resident HOA was trying to force him to join, despite the fact that the HOA had only come into existence when the surrounding development was built, which was long after his grandfather had built the place. Since he had recently inherited his grandfather's home, the HOA came knocking — just like the devil himself, asking him if he would join their club. But he said, “No, I don't want to be in your stupid club,” which made the HOA super salty.

Now, u/nexttohoa is wondering if he is in the wrong for refusing to join the HOA's stupid club and pay their stupid fees. What's your take?
