If you grew up in a household where your father figure was a manly man's man, you're probably aware that there is a lot of responsibility and honor tied to the duties of the flashlight holder. Even as an 8 year old, it's crystal clear that when you're holding the flashlight for your dad's tinkerings, your job is to be perfectly still, point it the right way, and say "mmmhmm" every few seconds like you actually know what a monkey wrench does. That's just one of those classic Dadisms that define an entire generation of paternal relationships. Dad jokes and fatherly humor seems to be another facet of becoming a parent as well. Not only do you enforce good flashlight holding, but you may also guard the thermostat, mow the lawn at 5am on Sundays, and head to the airport on travel days at least 6 hours before your flight departs. These are all just things that only a father, or someone who held a flashlight, would ever truly understand.
