I don't think I listened to music that wasn't from musicals until I was 12 years old. It's that serious. Luckily, I was able to stop doing theatre after I turned 18 and avoided pursuing a fruitless career in that field, but not everyone is so lucky.
I don't miss being a theatre kid because it was so intense. It wasn't intense in terms of competition for roles; It was intense because theatre kids develop the most confounding codependent friendships I have ever witnessed. I will never wish to go back to my days of cuddle piles or trying to hang out with the cool kids at the post-show IHOP dinner or attempting to catch up on drama about a "weird" girl in the ensemble.
