Every culture has myths. Myths range from ancient to brand baby-spanking new, and even though they can be a source of disinformation, they are so darn fun! One of my favorite myths stems back to my school days. When teachers were late to class, students would confidently proclaim that if they didn't show up after 15 minutes, we were legally allowed to leave. I now know that the law would not permit 30 6th graders to leave school in the middle of the day because of a tardy teacher, but it was fun to believe!
One of my favorite myths comes from nonother than Tumblr dot com. A post circulated about a disease called Alexandria's Genesis which turned people's eyes a dark purple. It made you have no body hair (although you still had eyebrows and hair on your head) and gave you no menstrual cycle (but you were still able to have kids). This myth was a tween's dream come true! You had purple eyes, didn't have to shave, and had no period! I wish there were a disease with no downsides that made your eyes purple, but unfortunately, this was a myth.
Some myths are easy to debunk, but others stay in the cultural consciousness for an unceremoniously long time, being treated as the truth. Redditors discussed some myths that we still largely believe, and I hate to admit that I still believed some of them.
