Update: 'This is a scam!': Recruiter demands upfront payment from new hire for training, gets upset when they refuse

Redditor and job seeker u/xlil_stoopidx took to Reddit's r/antiwork subreddit to share the experience that they had during an interview process, and the lessons and takeaways here are incredibly valuable for everyone to be aware of so that they don't fall prey to this trap.

Essentially, they had been interviewing for a role and were in the final stages of (what they thought) was their onboarding process when they were informed by the “HR manager” that they were going to need to provide the cost of their training for their role — upfront. They were shocked, and when they declined to pay, they received a nasty response.

When they shared screenshots of the ensuing exchange to r/antiwork, readers were quick to let them know that they had dodged a bullet and that there was a very high chance that this entire thing had been the setup for an elaborate scam and that the “employer" would disqualify their candidacy as soon as they had paid.

The original poster then returned to share an update to their post, warning all others who might come across an interview process like this to stay well clear.
