Bonus round: a TikToker is the reincarnation of who??
Hello again. It's Friday, which on Memebase can only mean one thing. We have no choice but to take a look at some of the wildest topics that have been swirling around on social media this week. As usual, there have been some pretty strange happenings. So without further ado, let's get into them.
The PewDiePie Empire Expands
For those of us who remember the heyday of the YouTube boom, it's always kind of strange to see its biggest stars move their way forward in life. This has been emphasized recently with PewDiePie's announcement that he and his wife Marzia are expecting their first child.
The news swiftly spread across social media after it was shared to YouTube, making many people feel old — and countless more using it to discuss the numerous reasons that they didn't like him. Waiting patiently for that influencer baby name predictor to try out this one.
Acting Divorced Online 101 With Tom Brady
The world is the oyster of the rich man who is freshly jobless and spouseless. He could do anything, anything at all, and what does he settle on? Posting an exceedingly cringeworthy thirst trap, that's what. Recently retired Tom Brady horrified football fans everywhere by posting a boxer clad selfie after his clothing brand ‘reminded’ him of an old tweet where he claimed he would recreate pictures of some underwear models after a certain amount of likes.
There are many upsetting qualities to the photo, but the worst part probably has to be the strategically placed hand over the crotch. Perhaps we don't want to know what Tom is hiding.
Leonardo DiCaprio is Still King of Age Gap Discourse
To absolutely no-one's surprise, Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted spending time with a model less than half his age again. A few days ago, photos emerged of the 48-year-old actor alongside 19-year-old Eden Polani. Twitter, of course, wasted no time in starting up the inevitable arguments and dumb memes about Leo's notoriously icky dating preferences. Time will tell if Eden makes it to the fated 25th birthday mark that has culled so many of his girlfriends.
Hogwarts Legacy Honors Traditional Naming Practices
For a series that has attracted such a diverse fanbase, Harry Potter has always had an astonishing diversity problem. Long before her well documented fall from grace, J.K. Rowling had a habit of shoehorning the worst kinds of stereotypes into her books. Characters from minority groups were usually relegated to the background, with the main thing that distinguished them being their eyebrow raising names. It's pretty crazy that she got away with the likes of Kingsley Shacklebolt and Cho Chang, let's be real.
Anyway, as we all know, Joanne's racist tendencies have been on the backburner in recent years so she can focus on hating trans people. By this token, it's kind of surprising that the new Hogwarts Legacy video game includes a character who is a transgender woman. Her name is Sirona Ryan, which man people were quick to point out carries on the longstanding tradition of offensive monikers in the Harry Potter universe. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Seinfeld AI Standup Goes Horribly Wrong
Funnily enough, the antics of the Harry Potter franchise were not the only transphobia-related story in the headlines this week. Artificial Intelligence aficionados were tickled when 24/7 Seinfeld parody Nothing, Forever started streaming on Twitch in December.
However, it was promptly milkshake ducked earlier this week. Combining the sitcom's classic humor with a dose of the absurd, it had gained a steady fanbase when the stream got banned thanks to the show's protagonist, Larry, making a transphobic joke mid comedy routine.
Its creators insisted that this Dave Chappelle style twist did not reflect their own views, and one investigation suggested the culprit for this might have been a temporary switch to a different, unfiltered AI model. The suspension is only due to last a fortnight, so it could be back up before we know it.
Finally, the World's Worst TikToker
If there's one thing that social media is good at, it's introducing us to the strangest and most baffling human beings that walk among us on this earth. TikTok has proved to be an industry leader in this regard, creating niche internet microcelebrities out of the most unlikely of people (I will never get over the day that Panda Girl got canceled).
Everyone's least favorite Zoomer zoo has really outdone itself this time, in the form of an individual known as Felix Cipher. Felix found himself in the spotlight this week after making a video defending his homemade septum ring that looked suspiciously like some Third Reich memorabilia. His reasoning? He was the gay, trans, half-Jewish reincarnation of Adolf Hitler.
Naturally, this prompted uproar on TikTok and beyond. Things only got weirder when people realized that he apparently had an egg laying kink, too. While Felix deleted his account not long after gaining viral attention, he certainly made an impact on everyone who learned about him. Just in case you wanted another dose of information you wish you could un-know today.
Now, wasn't that a range of topics insane enough to do serious brain damage to a medieval peasant? Good thing we're made of stronger stuff… probably. We'd better be, because there's only going to be more random online tidbits to wade through next week. See ya!
